SHE'S THERE WATCHING FOR ME IF I COULD FLY LIKE BIRDS ON HIGH THEN STRAIGHT TO HER HEART I'D GO SAILING John flew down the stairs two at a time, nervous at what he was about to do tonight. He'd waited long enough to tell Katherine of his feelings. Goodness knew that ten years had been enough! Tonight was it. He was going to tell her, and the world be damned if they didn't like it.
His head was filled with everything about her. Her long, golden hair, her smile, the way she made him feel inside. The power inside him grew to the point where he thought he was going to burst.
Finally, John reached the bottom of the stairs, and immediately began scanning the crowds for her. He had no idea what kind of costume she would be wearing, but all he knew was that he would know her when he saw her.
He'd practiced the speech so many times in his head. Katherine, there's something I need to tell you, he thought to himself as he pushed past a small group of vampires. It's been a long time in the making, but...
A goddess. How very fitting. His heart skipped what felt like ten beats as he finally found the girl he had been looking for. He put his Blues Brothers sunglasses into his pocket and took of the fedora hat he had been wearing, leaving him in the black-tie suit he had ironed not half an hour ago.
"Katherine," you could practically hear the love he had for her in his voice. The way it wrapped around the syllables, just like he hoped his arms would do later that night. "You look stunning." he said, his blue eyes sparkling. She was beautiful.

Katherine couldn't stop smiling. Why she wasn't too sure, was it perhaps the fact that those who were already here seemed to be having such a ball, or was it purely because she was looking forward to seeing John tonight? The more she thought about it the more the latter of the two options began to look like the reason.
Katherine took a sip of the wine her and the other Professors had been provided with and brushed down her dress. As he gaze began to rise once more she caught the unmistakable sound of John. Her attention quickly snapped in his direction, her eyes locking with his own beautiful blue ones, a smile once again finding it's way onto her face as it so often did around him.
She felt her heart skip a beat as he drew closer, her smile widening at his words, she'd always loved the way he said her name. Taking in his outfit she nodded her head, her eyes once again returning to his handsome face, "You happen to look rather dashing yourself Mr Dawlish..." she said honestly.
Taking in the suit and the hat in his hand, she let out a light chuckle, "Am I right in assuming your a Blues Brother?" she asked, Muggles were remarkable, there was no doubt about it.
As she kept her focus locked on him she willed her heart rate to slow down. The effect he had on her whenever he was around was insane, Katherine couldn't remember a time when her body had reacted in such a way around one man. But he's not just any man is he? she thought, this was John a man she'd loved since before she could remember.

SHE'S THERE WATCHING FOR ME
IF I COULD FLY LIKE BIRDS ON HIGH THEN STRAIGHT TO HER HEART I'D GO SAILING John could barely contain himself as Katherine spoke. All he wanted to do was whisk her away right now and tell her exactly how he felt about her. His cheeks flushed bright red as she complimented him and his words were suddenly caught at the back of his throat.
"I am, indeed," he said with a sly smile, his chest burning with nervousness. "Very observant of you," John smiled. His hands wanted to reach out and touch her, but standing in the hallway was not the time and place. He had it all planned out in his head and if he was lucky, it would all go well. "And you're a goddess -" he said in return, admiring her costume. "I mean, dressed as a goddess," Well that was classy, he thought to himself.
His nerves were staring to get the better of him. This wasn't a good sign. "Listen, Katherine, can I talk to yo -" John started to say, but was interrupted by a fourth year Ravenclaw who had shuffled in remarkably close to Katherine, staring up at her with googly eyes.
"Excuse me," John said in a cautious tone, his eyebrows knitting together in confusion. The student paid no attention to John, but instead started complimenting Katherine's outfit with somewhat vulgarity. "That's enough," John said after a moment, his voice low and cutting through the air. He escorted the student towards his group of friends by the arm and left him there.
"Sorry about that," John shook his head, unable to think of why on Earth a student would do that to a Professor. "Anyway, what I wanted to say was -" but John was interrupted again by another student. What was this? International 'profess-your-love-for-Katherine-Dupree' day?

"Hey, I know about Muggles to appreciate who the Blue's Brothers are..." she chuckled, she actually found them highly amusing. Tucking back a stray curl from her face, she kept her eyes trained on John, and still her heart thundered in her chest, her smile widening as he commented on her outfit again, calling her a Goddess before backtracking and saying she was dressed like one. Forcing herself not to think too much into his slip Katherine smiled and nodded her head, "Well last year I made the mistake of coming dressed as Wonder woman...no one got it." she chuckled.
Whatever John had been about to say to her was rudely interrupted by a young fourth year, whom she immediately recognized from her Muggle Studies class. Smiling at the boy Katherine felt herself immediately grow wary of the way he was looking at her. Her eyes flickered to John whose look of confusion mirrored her own. The words that came out of the boys mouth made Katherine's eyes widen in surprise, especially as the boy let his eyes roam over her in a way that made her incredibly uncomfortable.
As John escorted the boy away, Katherine blew out a small breath, appreciating him stepping in like that but still thoroughly thrown by the usually quiet boys attitude towards her. "That was strange to say the least..." she replied softly to John, shooting him a small smile. Unconsciously she'd moved slightly closer to him, well aware of the eyes still following her.
"So go on, what is it you wanted to tell me?" she asked, ignoring it, she focused all of her attention on John watching him again as he tried to tell her something only this time they were interrupted again by another student. Again she was getting the same look and the words coming out of his mouth were similar to the Ravenclaw's. Katherine frowned and looked at John, "What the hell is going on?" she asked him, hoping he could clue her in, was she being pranked?
Letting her eyes drift around the hall, Katherine became suddenly full aware there were a lot more eyes on her than just these two boys. Suddenly she felt nervous and looked at John, wondering if he to had seen.

SHE'S THERE WATCHING FOR ME
IF I COULD FLY LIKE BIRDS ON HIGH THEN STRAIGHT TO HER HEART I'D GO SAILING was almost instantaneous. Just as John escorted the second boy away, he felt the eyes of the whole room turn to Katherine. This wasn't good. He stepped up slowly behind Katherine, as the students - boys and girls alike - started making googly eyes after her. "I think we'd best go outside," he said quietly in her ear, feeling his heart give a loud thump.
Just as he put his hand on Katherine's elbow to take her outside, three quarters of the room made a lunge for Katherine like lovesick puppies who couldn't find enough hands to touch the other with. John, feeling scared (not only for himself, but for Katherine as well) barricaded the door to the Great Hall as he put his hand around Katherine's waist and ran like hell.
"What the hell is going on!" he yelled over the loud noises of people calling Katherine's name amongst other things. "This is ridiculous!" He slammed the doors to the Great Hall shut, leaving the crowd of students banging fiercely against the wooden frame.
As John stood with his back against the door, he looked over Katherine's shoulder to see if there was anyone within the hall that was behaving as weirdly as the kids outside. His gaze flicked over to the punch table, back to Katherine and then to the door to the outside where he had been planning on telling her that he loved her.
This was going to be difficult. John took a deep breath and looked over at Katherine - who, given the circumstances, seemed very freaked out.
He shifted his weight so he was no longer holding the doors tightly shut, and ran over to Katherine and slipped a hand around her slim waist. "Come on," he said to her as he pulled her into a run, heading straight for the door that led to the outside courtyard.
As soon as the two of them were outside, John pulled his wand out and locked the door, giving them the privacy he had been hoping for. "Well, that was different," he said in a huff, taking deep breaths as he tried to process what on earth had just happened. "Are you okay?"

John moved to stand behind her, and even before Katherine could appreciate how close he was to her, or register the heat from his body, she heard him whisper it was probably best they move outside. Looking around the hall she couldn't help but agree, her cheeks burning brightly from all the attention now focused on her. It didn't take a genius to realize what had happened.
As a crowd of students began to move towards her Katherine felt her stomach turn, though John had wrapped his strong arm around her waist and hastily began guiding her outside much to her immense appreciation. As she moved through the crowd, hearing some of the things her students were saying made her ill and shocked her enough to make her steps falter occasionally.
John let her go outside as he locked the large doors behind him, and she took a few steps away. Pressing her hand against her chest she blew out a small breath, shaking her head a little, disappointment flooded through her. All week long she'd been looking forward to the ball, she made it a mission to find out who the culprits where for obviously spiking the punch with Love Potion...it was the only excuse for what was happening.
It barely registered when John led her outside, only when she felt the welcoming feel of the cool air against her skin did she refocus on her surroundings. And Johns arm around her waist, suddenly it felt like nothing inside had happened, all she was aware of was him holding her. Sparks of electricity flooded through her entire being then almost as quickly as it started she crashed back down to Earth when John's hand slipped from her waist so he could lock the doors.
Quickly gathering herself together, she shook her head shooting him an unsure smile, "I have to admit that's the most bizzare thing to have ever happened at the Halloween ball...and we've had some strange things happen..." she chuckled, obviously still thrown by what had occured. Looking around her, she took a few steps away from John, her eyes drifting up to the night sky and the stars shining there, "Looks like my time at the ball is done for this year anyway..." she said turning back to look at him, unable to find it in her to be disappointed, after all here she was alone with John and suddenly she found herself smiling...

SHE'S THERE WATCHING FOR ME
IF I COULD FLY LIKE BIRDS ON HIGH THEN STRAIGHT TO HER HEART I'D GO SAILING John pressed his lips into a hard line. She was taking the whole thing remarkably well, considering the sheer number of students that had.. well. There had been so much, John barely knew the words to describe what had just happened. A hoard of students had suddenly become infatuated with Katherine - to the point when they were willing to do just about anything to get their grabby hands on her.
As John caught his breath and Katherine stepped out of his reach and looked up at the stars, John couldn't help but admire the beautiful woman standing before him. Dressed in her costume, she was almost etherial. Too good to be true. Too god-like for John to ever be with. He sighed.
Almost as if he knew it was going to be okay, John's nerves disappeared. What did he have to be nervous about? He and Katherine had known each other for years. Even if he didn't quite get the answer he wanted, he and Katherine would still be friends. And if John could even just be lucky enough to have her in his life, that was good enough for him.
"Katherine," he said in his deep voice as he took a small step towards her, closing the gap between the two of them. Here he was, standing right in her personal space bubble, about to make the move he'd been dreaming of since he was fourteen. As Katherine turned around to look at him, John cupped a hand to her face and pressed his lips softly to hers. Hopefully that would get the message through.

John probably expected her to freak out that was usually the obvious reaction, but her good mood wouldn't allow it. Or maybe it was simply the fact that she didn't feel the need to worry or be scared over what had happened, John had taken care of her, rushed her out of there before things could have gotten way out of hand and for that she was grateful. It made her smile when she thought about it, and how quick he'd jumped into the action of protecting her.
Don't read too much into it
Shaking that thought away she blew out a breath and turned around to face John when he said her name. Only now was she aware of how close he had moved, there was barely any space between them, yet before Katherine could assess the situation more clearly she felt John's hand cup her face before he pressed his lips to her own.
All of a sudden the world stopped turning, Katherine had froze, not knowing if she was dreaming or if this was actually happening. John was kissing her and as soon as that though entered her quickly fizzled brain, Katherine found herself kissing him back, her hand coming to rest on his chest.
Fireworks! That was the only way to describe it. All these years and finally it was happening. John was kissing her and she was kissing him back, her entire person humming in complete and utter joy. It didn't even enter her mind what had happened in the Great Hall, or that there was the tiniest chance John too had had the potion. No right now, all Katherine could think was...finally...

SHE'S THERE WATCHING FOR ME
IF I COULD FLY LIKE BIRDS ON HIGH THEN STRAIGHT TO HER HEART I'D GO SAILING Katherine's lips melted into his and John couldn't help but want more. More of Katherine - more of this, for the rest of their lives. As Katherine started kissing him back, John's whole world melted around him. He pulled her closer, moving his hands from her face to the small of her back, their lips moving in ways that John had only dreamt of. He didn't want this moment to end, and from the way Katherine kissed him back, he could only guess that she felt the same way that he did.
"Katherine," he said again, eyes shut, their foreheads touching. He took a deep breath, his lips still on fire from where they had met hers. "I have to tell you." He opened his eyes and cupped her face again, wanting nothing more than to pull her back towards him for round two. "I've been in love with you since as long as I can remember."
He was getting all emotional! Tears sprang to his eyes and he had to sniffle in order to keep himself from weeping tears of joy. "Oh, Katherine, I am yours," he said, pulling the beautiful woman in front of him into a hug. He picked her up and whirled her around, "I am yours heart and soul," he cried as he lifted her back down, and consequently led her into another kiss, feeling his heart ignite once again.
There was not much else to say. He'd done it. He'd declared his love for Katherine, and if she felt the same way, John was going to make sure that nothing came in their path. He would be with her always, because he loved her, and life without Katherine was no life at all.

As he pulled her close, Katherine let her arms wrap themselves around John's shoulders, holding herself to him tightly as his hands found their resting place on the small of her back. His touch sent electric shocks through her body, his lips, his kisses making her knees weaken to the point where her only semblance of support and the only reason she was still stood upright, was the hold she had on his shoulders. All too soon the kiss had ended but their hold on each other never lessoned, Katherine felt like she was floating, like any moment she was going to wake up from this incredible dream as she listened to John.
"I've been in love with you since as long as I can remember."
That was it, Katherine felt her heart burst with complete and utter joy and she too was battling the tears that threatened to fall. "Oh John I love..." before she could even get out a reply she was back in his arms, being spun around. "Oh, Katherine, I am yours, I am yours heart and soul," he cried, and Katherine let out a sound of happiness, burying her face into the crook of his neck, inhaling his scent just before he placed her down, Katherine laughed with pure joy, before her eyes flickered to the entrance hall doors then back to John.
That was all it took.
A horrible realisation dawned on the blonde teacher and before she could do anything she was back on her feet and John was kissing her again. All she wanted was to sink into his embrace once more, in fact she did, but at the same time the tears she'd held back sprung loose but this time for a totally different reason other than being happy. Breaking off the kiss she moved back her hand over her mouth as she kept her face turned to the ground, keeping her eyes closed, attempting to gather herself together, but it was no use she was feeling too much.
It was the potion...that could be the only reason he was saying this...
Shaking her head she looked back at John, unable to stem the few tears that had fallen. Inside she could feel her heart breaking, feel the humiliation wash over her, "This isn't right...this isn't...how it's supposed to..." she cut herself off and shook her head again, "You don't love me John...it's the potion...I...you should get to Professor Dumbledore...I have...I have to go..." she hurried her words out and with her hand against her chest hurried past John as more tears fell...

SHE'S THERE WATCHING FOR ME
IF I COULD FLY LIKE BIRDS ON HIGH THEN STRAIGHT TO HER HEART I'D GO SAILING Confusion washed over John as Katherine pushed him away and put a hand over her mouth to keep the tears in. "Katherine...?" he said, his arms outstretched and his mind puzzled as to the sudden change. It didn't take long for her words to sink in.
As she explained, the cogs in John's mind started ticking. What? Potion? He stalled for a few seconds, trying to come to terms with what Katherine was saying. "Katherine," he cried, moving a few steps closer to her. "No, no it's not - it's not the potion -" he stuttered, trying to get the words out as fast as he possibly could. This was not how it was meant to be!
A hole ripped and tore through the very centre of John's chest as he watched Katherine's eyes fill with tears. "No, no no no," he repeated, his mind going dark and his eyes starting to well up with tears of his own. "Katherine, it's not the potion!" John roared as Katherine moved away from him and ran back inside.
This was not how it was meant to be! He loved her - with every fibre of his being - and she loved him. It wasn't the potion, but those stupid, insufferable kids who had done this were to blame for the heartache that now lay in both John and Katherine's hearts.
"KATHERINE!" John roared, running after her as she left, but to no avail, the door shut in his face and John was left standing outside - cold and alone, just like he'd been for the last ten years.
