i do the best IMITATION OF MYSELF The deed had been done and it was not time for Evan Rosier to wash his hands of the blood that had been shed. Satisfied with the work that he, Amycus and Bellatrix had achieved over the passing weekend, Evan sat alone in the Duelling Classroom, the curtains pulled tight and the desks all moved to one side. There was one armchair, tucked into the corner of the room where Evan sat, mulling over the events.
The shrieks. The begging for mercy. Evan had never been apart of anything to that scale, but the most worrying thought was the enjoyment he got out of it. Was there something wrong with him? He didn't think so, nor did anyone else he respected of admired, but the nagging voice at the back of his head told him that something about the whole sticky situation wasn't right.
Just as he was lost deep in his thought process, a sliver of light came into the dark and dampened room. The door had opened slightly, and from the uncertain smile Evan recognized all too well, it wasn't hard to guess who was behind the door. He squinted, trying to figure out of his guess had indeed been correct, but with the light almost shining directly in his eyes, it became hard to make out the shadowy figure that stood within the light.

By Morgana, Merlin and Rowena a pox on the ignorant and the obtuse
Althea's day had been uncommonly productive. In Potions, a stroke of inspiration had guaranteed that her Argyll's Bane topical poison not only damaged the nerves but also paralyzed the area, ensuring an extra two minutes before detection and therefore minimizing the window for recovery. The Professor had been upset at the 'terrible risk' until Althea had politely pointed out that poisons were supposed to cause permanent harm and the smaller the window for recuperation, the more successful the application. Even his grudging outstanding and lack of points couldn't ruin her cheer, not when her first discovery was followed by yet another.
Not two hours later in the library Althea discovered the charm she had been searching for for weeks: a beautiful partial banishment charm, a veritable masterpiece with an insidious timed and spreading element if she had understood the arithmancy correctly. She had almost broken the librarian's rules about laughing and running around the shelves as she rushed to sign out the book and take it to the dorm where she could study the arithmantic calculations in privacy. It was delicate work but she had decided to dedicate her spare time, such as it was, to mastering the charm by the end of the year. At home, showing her proficiency in using cascade splinching on a human was bound to earn her at least three tutoring sessions with a Master of her choice.
She had quickly read over her assignments and quizzed herself on the next day's lesson, before she grabbed her wand and stealthily made her way to the Dueling Classroom. It was well past curfew but she had decided that risking a detention was preferable to practicing during the day. Before curfew she risked encountering some of the more unsavory elements in Gryffindor and Slytherin and getting hexxed for good measure or some of the more numerous but just as dangerous tattletales littering each of the four houses who would undoubtedly report her for using questionable magic on school grounds.
So it was with some surprise and quite a bit of aprehension that she stared at the room's sole occupant: Evan Rosier. Hiding her misgivings at being in such close proximity to the frightening boy and so far from the protection the school body usually afforded her, Althea attempted a polite smile she opened the door a little wider.
'Good evening, Rosier.'

i do the best IMITATION OF MYSELF Evan looked up at the sound of his name. It was definitely someone he knew who stood at the door, but as the mystery figure opened the door a little wider, Evan got a good look at who it was.
"Althea," he said, his tone surprised. "I'm surprised to see you here." He didn't get out of his chair or make any other movements. He tilted his head upwards and put his fingers under his chin, his hands looking like they were clasped together in prayer. "Out after curfew, tsk tsk." Evan's dark and narrow eyes followed her movement, his tone disapproving.
But that was just Evan for you. Constantly disapproving of everything and everyone he met. He had known Althea and her family for many, many years and the two of them were often put together as children. Especially at grand functions or during the summer holidays. Although Evan never seemed to terrorise Thea personally, there were always other children more vulnerable - an easier target. The two of them were always unfailingly polite to each other, as was expected of most of the pureblood families.
"What brings you here on such a fine evening?"

By Morgana, Merlin and Rowena a pox on the ignorant and the obtuse 'I had been hoping to practice a new charm I discovered.' Althea replied, taking his casual gestures and polite inquiry for an unspoken truce: for him to have shown no disapproval at all to someone outside his circle of allies or even Slytherin would have meant something was markedly wrong, Polyjuice perhaps.
She had been ready to turn tail and bolt down the hallway if he had reached for his wand, but the darkness that seemed to simmer under his skin was being held firmly in check. Taking a couple more steps, she mused that this could be a wonderful opportunity to bounce a few ideas off someone more experienced with aggressive magic.
'Something... not strictly classwork and which most of our esteemed educators would take a dim view of.' she reflected, imagining Professor Flitwick having a near apoplexy on hearing her request to be allowed to practice on a couple of her more obnoxious year-mates. 'I have looked over the calculations several times and it seems to be a partial banishment charm - not unlike an Entrail-Expelling curse in that way - that has been adapted to mutate the positional component by half an inch every time the previous part is banished.' she explained, summoning a target dummy to the middle of the room and a chair for herself.
'I believe that this causes the charmed area to spread and making a focus point for dispelling the charm more difficult to locate.' she added, trying to find a way to phrase her next request in such a way that would not seem insulting to the older boy. It was considered terribly rude to engage someone in conversation on equal grounds if they were of higher status, as Rosier was due to his age. Althea was sure that, having been trained in pureblood customs, it was something the other boy was bound to know. However, she hadn't come here to stand all night either.
'May I sit with you?' she asked hesitantly, pointing to the chair. 'Any insight you can share on the subject would be greatly appreciated.'

i do the best IMITATION OF MYSELF Evan frowned, unable to gather his thoughts in time to process Thea's answer. So, she was coming here to practice some spells? Almost illegal spells? As Evan finally came to the realisation, his ear's pricked up in excitement. The events of the previous weekend had given him a taste of what his life was now to become, and having the opportunity to learn more from someone like Thea was almost too inviting. Slowly, Evan's eyes watched the girl as she moved further into the room and she told him more of her plans.
On her request to take the seat next to him, Evan said nothing, but merely gestured for Althea to take the seat. She wanted his knowledge about the subject, but Evan wasn't sure what he could give. He looked over, studying the way the girl held herself with such an eager interest for her newfound discovery. Would she use it against him? Evan doubted it, but with a mind like his, all of the possibilities had to be explored. He moved himself in his chair so that he was leaning in closer to Thea.
"You would like my help," It wasn't a question, "when you already know so much." His eyes bore into Thea's wondering why, out of all people, she would ask him. He took a few moments, processing his answer to her question. "Demonstrate for me on this dummy and I'll see what I can do."
Evan was eager to see how powerful this new spell was, and how correct Thea was. After all, she could be useful for the next fight he got into... Slowly standing up, Evan folded his hands behind his back and watched intently as Thea worked. This would be interesting...

By Morgana, Merlin and Rowena a pox on the ignorant and the obtuse Seeing that she had the boy's approval to proceed with her experiments, Althea started explaining 'Like most of spells described in old tomes, the wand movements are a bit vague. What I've deduced so far is that, since this is essentially a movement charm, I would need to start with an outward swish.'
She got up to demonstrate. 'Recuso substantia' she intoned, pointing her wand at the dummy's heart. A purple jet hit the practice dummy's chest and then dissipated. Half a dozen failed incantations later, the dummy remained unharmed. Turning her back to it, Althea explained with a smile. 'So far, I've only taken into account the action without any intent behind it. The magic is released but has no active purpose. Only simple spells work without conscious intent but I had to explore all possibilities.'
As she talked, she watched Rosier trying to gauge how much patience he had left after her little display. None of this thoughts showed and rather than waste her time on what ifs, she forged ahead, trying to present the matter with which he could help in an attractive light.
'For this sort of charm the intent is a bit unclear. The pain is more of a side effect than an objective.' as she talked, she considered the room's other occupant. In spite of herself she was getting excited at being able to share this with someone, even if that someone was only a distant, and possibly dangerous, acquaintance. Still, Althea didn't believe him ill-bred enough to curse her when he had invited her to explain. On the matter of the charm she was attempting, she was almost certain that he had to the knowledge to help, but whether or not he would admit to having it was another thing entirely.
Althea was a aware that knowing the theory behind the three Unforgivables and knowing how to cast them were two different things. She could, of course, wait until the holidays and ask her parents for help, but that would defeat the purpose. She wanted to show her proficiency not beg them for help. It all came down to her ignorance on the topic and another's willingness to dispel that ignorance. She wondered what he would ask in return and found that she couldn't muster up the energy to worry about it. She would deal with that when it happened. With that decision in mind, she flicked her wand at the faded curtains, banishing and summoning, banishing and summoning. 'Will, on the other hand... I don't want them, I want them, I don't want them...' As she completed the circuit, she paused a few feet from the dummy 'Recuso substantia' As predicted, nothing happened. 'However, the dummy has been enchanted to mimic a person...' she started, certain that he could now see her train of thought '...and the spell wills the movement of... part of a person. Recuso substantia' The dummy twitched.
'What do you know of control curses?' she challenged with a smile. [ooc: pam-pam-paam ]

i do the best IMITATION OF MYSELF Evan felt like he was in charms class, only Thea was a lot better to look at than old Flitwick. He circled Thea and the dummy as she spoke, providing the necessary information and theory behind the hexes she had been studying. Evan said nothing, but merely listened and continued to circle. He watched as the dummy, hex after hex, remained still. It was only after Thea explained a bit further and cast the spell once more, it twitched.
"Seems like you've been very busy since we last talked, Thea," Evan's voice was low as he came to a halt, standing to the left of the girl. "I can see what you're doing there." he finished, nodding towards the now limp dummy. Thea was awfully clever and very good at showing it. The only problem in Evan's way, now, was to somehow convince her to join the side of the Dark Lord, where she would then be able to use her knowledge and abilities to their full extent.
"What do I know of control curses?" Evan frowned, repeating the question. He stepped forward quietly, unfolding his hands from behind his back and drawing his wand from within his flowing black robes. "Imperio!"
he whispered, pointing his wand towards the dummy. The dummy almost sprang to life, it's limbs moving almost unnaturally. Evan flicked his wand downwards and the dummy fell to the floor in a heaped pile, it's forearms and shoulders twisting into a distorted backwards 'L' shape that surely would have hurt if done to a human. Evan knew he was in safe company with Thea. After all, she was showing him a spell that would make Flitwick's tiny moustache curl. She would not dare tell anyone about his use of the Imperio curse within school walls. Evan let his wand fall by his side and the curse was lifted from the dummy, who lifted back up onto it's stand. "How long have you been working on this one?" Evan asked quietly, wondering how long Thea had been researching 'Recuso Substantia' for. He was not a man of many words - Evan much preferred to keep things to himself - but, in all honesty, was very impressed with what Thea had been working on.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

By Morgana, Merlin and Rowena a pox on the ignorant and the obtuse Watching Rosier manipulate the training dummy was like watching a maestro conducting an opera - something special coming to life under the directions of one man - and Althea was fairly trembling with excitement. Her mind was so engaged in analyzing the movements, divining the intent and making and discarding usage scenarios that it took her a few moments to realize that the boy had released the spell and was asking her a question.
'I've been searching for the charm since the term started... During the summer I came across a reference to it in "Charms of the Old Houses" and then again in "Charm it to Last, Binding your Charms" where it was mentioned as a 'most dubious usage of binding charms, whose sole purpose was to inflict harm upon the unwillingly bound and was therefore a clear example of indubitably evil intent'' she admitted with a shrug.
It was one thing to discuss your summer reading with fellow Ravens and quite another to share it with Slytherins. Although her dorm-mates' chief interest lay in comparing their information with that acquired by others, the Ravens could develop quite rigid moral compasses when it suited them - and it often suited them at the most inopportune times. Slytherins were more likely to be amused and encouraged by dire warnings as the one she had just quoted instead of being deterred.
'Aside from those two I couldn't find any cross-reference nor could I find the charm mentioned in any other book at the manor... ' Althea continued before sharing her reasons for believing that the spell not only existed but that it could possibly be found in Hogwarts library. Her relief at having discovered the charm was only surpassed by her joy at finding someone who could -hopefully- help her master the control component of the spell. They would have to negotiate a price, that is, if he was amenable to teaching at all...
On the tail of that thought came the abrupt reminder of who she was dealing with and the myriad reasons why Rosier and her were not friends but simple acquaintances. Dismayed, she started to consider mastering the Imperius Curse by herself and how difficult that would be without anyone to point out her mistakes. The smart thing to do would be to just bear the bludger and ask him.
'...Would you, perhaps, be willing to teach me the spell in exchange for one mutually-agreed upon favor ?' she said in an uncertain tone of voice. [ooc: I'm sorry, I'm sorry it's late and I'm not really happy with it but all my spare time is spent helping my husband with stuff for work and I don't want to let this plot die. ]

i do the best IMITATION OF MYSELF Evan couldn't help but smile at now nonchalant Thea seemed at spending her whole summer searching for any news of a spell. Heavens knew that Evan would not have the patience or time to spend on one single spell, but for someone like Thea it seemed like a perfectly suitable way to spend the time. Thea had always been smart. When the two of them were put together as children, Thea was always clued in as to what kind of magic the adults were using. It was a talent in Thea that Evan admired and was jealous of, and Evan was willing to do whatever it took to take Thea onto the Dark Lord's side.
"You were busy, then," Evan said nonchalantly, raising his eyebrows.
After the events of the previous weekend, Evan was feeling powerful. And, after the display of control he had just shown Thea, Evan was certainly feeling up to the challenge. She seemed uncertain of the request she had just asked, and Evan started to wander around again, pondering the thought. He opened his mouth to speak, but instead, after deliberation, he gestured back towards the seats he and Thea had been sitting in only a few minutes earlier.
"I would be willing, Thea," Evan said politely, gazing over at the girl in front of him. "But this 'mutually-agreed on favour' you speak of. What did you have in mind?" He studied her facial expression as she answered. "For an old acquaintance," he said as he leaned forward in his chair, pushing the personal boundary he had created between the two of them. "I wouldn't need any favours in return. You simply name the time and place and I'll let you in on some trade secrets."
Of course, he would need to build up his trust with her if he was to successfully gain an ally in her. But, it would be something he was willing to do. Thea had a brilliant mind and Evan did not want to see it wasted. "I might like to let you know that I will be sparse for the next couple of days." He was referring to the fact that the culprits behind the Death Eater Attack had not yet been caught, and Evan planned on keeping it that way. He provided no such information as to where he was going to escape to, but he hardly thought Thea would mind. They were still only acquaintances, after all.
