Everything had been such a blur. There were whizzing lights, extreme pain and now she was confined to a bed that felt unfamiliar and so wrong. From what she could gather as she slipped in and out of consciousness, she had been attacked. Others had been attacked. And they'd all been unable to defend themselves.
Marlene was exhausted. All she wanted to do was lie down and let herself rest. The Ministry Officials had been asking the three victims for any information they could remember about the attack, or the attackers, but all Marlene knew was a detention slip - and then darkness. She watched as Albus Dumbledore stepped in and guided the Aurors out of the room, stating that the three of them needed rest and could answer any such questions they would have in the morning.
For Marlene, all she knew was the physical pain of what had happened. Lachlan and Emily, who had been tortured before their worlds turned black, had to endure taunting, teasing and an incredible amount of pain. Marlene had been out cold as she'd hit the forest floor and had no clue as to the events happening outside her head.
For the times she was awake, she watched as the two of them sank back into their shells. They woke up in the middle of the night, screaming, begging for mercy, and all Marlene could do was watch. Restricted to her bed, with three broken ribs, severe internal bleeding and a broken collar bone, she was forbidden from moving. The bones would heal overnight, but the bleeding was going to be something tricky.
Lachlan moved out of his own bed and into Emily's and Marlene had never felt so alone. She strained her head to see the two of them as they whispered comfort to each other. She couldn't imagine what they'd seen; what they'd heard.
It was hard to tell who had the worse end of the deal. Marlene; or them.
Just as Marlene lay her head back down on the pillow, wincing at the pain it caused her collarbone, a friendly face came to sit by her side. "Sirius," she croaked, her chapped lips forming a skeletal smile on her face. "You're here."

Sirius felt all his self-assurance and confidence fade away when Marlene acknowledged that he was somehow in St. Mungo’s, visiting the older Gryffindor. ‘Well, where else would I be?’ he wanted to say with a smile, but couldn’t quite manage to bring himself to say the words. Mostly because she looked terrible and anything he wanted to say was stuck in his throat, trapped there by a growing lump of rage. But also because, well, why was he here? It wasn’t like they had ever really chatted much before he asked her out on a date. The date they hadn’t even got to go on because of those bloody Slytherins. It was a lot of effort to go to for a girl he wasn’t even shagging, and Sirius was feeling confused all around about how and why he had ended up ‘here’. But he wasn’t exactly ready to think about all that yet, so instead he offered up a feeble smile and sat down gently on the edge of Marlene’s bed.
Word had spread quickly around the school about the attacks, naturally, because Dumbledore had tried to keep it quiet. Sirius had immediately gone to McGonagall to try to see Marlene, but had been denied. Never one to let that sort of thing stand in his way, Sirius had gone off to Hogsmeade via a secret passageway, slipped into the apartment of the owners of Honeyduke’s and ‘borrowed’ their floo network connected fireplace for a bit. After that, well, it had been easy to gain access to Marlene’s hospital room.
“The castle was boring,” Sirius finally replied with a casual shrug. His eyes racked over Marlene’s form, trying to commit every bruise and scratch to memory. Slytherin house would pay for this. No one attacked his Gryffindors without repercussions. Emily and Marlene would be avenged, even if Sirius had to personally curse every last one from the seventh years down. He’d start with his ‘darling’ and ‘charming’ cousin, Bellatrix.
“Want to talk about it?” Sirius wasn’t one for talking anything out, but Remus had said more than once that most girls like that sort of thing. Usually he ignored Remus, but now seemed like a good time to finally listen to his furry friend.

There was something different about Sirius. He was trying to pass off as care-free and casual, but his eyes were lined with concern as they scanned Marlene's broken and fragile body. Was the concernt for her, or for the safety that had been compromised that night? Nothing like this had ever happened at Hogwarts. She shook her head, deciding not to think about it too hard. Thinking about anything in the state she was was not a good idea.
"There's not much to talk about," she said slowly, her eyes looking over to Lachlan and Emily huddled on the bed in the far corner. "I don't remember much."
They were all talking about Hagrid and asking each other where on earth he was, when Marlene was hit by the Cruciatus Curse. She fell unconscious some time after that, and the next thing she knew, she was being wheeled into St. Mungo's. She couldn't even remember the pain, or hitting the forest floor. Maybe they'd addled with her memory, but for all Marlene knew, she was simply here, covered in bruises and fractures. "All I really remember are the flashing lights as they wheeled me into this room."
"Sorry about our date," she said quietly after a moments pause. Lord knew she would have given anything to be with Sirius that night. There would be plenty more opportunities, but as for the present, Marlene was stuck in the small, poorly-lit hospital room with the promise of being kept there for another week at least. She wanted to ask Sirius if they could reschedule it, but a nagging voice at the back of her head told her to stop. He'd be waiting for a while, and if anything, Sirius wasn't very good at waiting.
"How're things back at school?" she asked, looking up into his dark brown eyes. People were probably starting to talk, no doubt.
