if music be the food of love, play on. If the rumours were true, a very old friend of John's was teaching Muggle Studies, here in the castle. His heart skipped a beat with each step he climbed, eager to see Katherine beyond belief. His heart in his mouth, he pressed himself against the wall outside her Muggle Studies classroom, listening to the last words of her class before school ended for the day.
A million questions ran through his mind. Would Katherine remember him? Would she still want to be friends with him? Of course, Katherine still kept in touch with John's younger sister, Harriet, but as for the friendship he and Katherine had formed at school... well, that was another story entirely.
His heart racing out of his chest and the sounds of books closing and chairs scraping along the ground, it was evident that class was clearly over. Holding his breath, he waited for the last student to leave the classroom before he entered. Slowly, he pushed open the creaky old wooden door, revealing the back of a blonde haired woman dusting chalk off the board.
"You were always very good at Muggle Studies," he said in his deep voice, biting down hard on his lower lip. Surely she would remember him? "And, from the looks of it, good enough to become Professor. My congratulations," John smiled, unable to contain himself.
Here she was, as beautiful as ever.

Katherine looked around with a small amused smile tugging at her lips when she began to explain to her students the function of a television set. Today was just the introduction to the Muggle contraptions but next lesson she was going to show them exactly how one worked. "Okay, there's really no need for you all to look so worried, you'll see how it works for yourself next lesson," she chuckled, walking back around her desk. "Okay so I want you all to read up on the information I've given you and be prepared for next lesson, I'll be quizzing you all...class dismissed!" she told them with a bright smile, watching with slight amusment as all of her students hurried to pack their bags and leave.
With a small shake of her head and a light chuckle, she picked up the duster and headed back to her board. Classes were over for her today so once she'd tidied up here, she had a nice pile of papers waiting to be marked. As she began to clean the board, Katherine heard the classroom door open again, assuming it was simply a student who'd forgotten something Katherine didn't turn around right away, but when someone spoke she froze.
That voice, it had been so long since she'd heard it, but Katherine would know it anywhere. Turning around she saw her assumptions to be correct. John Dawlish, her best friends older brother stood at the back of the room looking as handsome as she remembered. Katherine felt her heartbeat skip as her eyes locked on the man who'd captured her heart back when she'd been in school. "John Dawlish..." she said his name with a smile, as she stepped away from the board, crossing her arms, "Now this is a surprise, what are you doing here?" she asked, biting down on her lip.

if music be the food of love, play on. John couldn't help but smile back. Everything about Katherine was infectious; her smile, her good nature and especially her laughter. It was all coming back to him: memories of their childhood, spent in the company of each other each year at Hogwarts, as well as the summers. He laughed and slipped his hands into his pockets. "You remembered," he smiled, unable to look away from Katherine's boldly blue eyes. How they'd entranced him back when they were teenagers; was it really so long ago?
"I'm actually working here now," he laughed, his eyebrows raised. "Professor of Defence Against the Dark Arts." It felt strange to actually say those words out loud. He was teaching here now; after all those years of working in the Ministry, he never thought that he would be here. He never thought he'd see Katherine here! And looking so content and happy. 'She must love her job', John thought to himself.
"I was down chatting to Filius, when he mentioned you'd be here. Thought I'd come up and say hi," he took a few steps closer to Katherine, leaning back against the teacher's desk. "Hi," he said, pulling his hand out of his pocket and wiggling his fingers at her in a hello. "How long have you been Professor of Muggle Studies?" he inquired, folding his arms across his chest.

"Of course I remember you..." Katherine replied with a small laugh, finding it amusing that he'd think she could forget someone like him. Tucking her hair behind her ear she listened to him as he walked closer to her, eventually coming to lean back against her desk. Standing just off to the side of him she smiled again, "Your our new Professor? John that great, congradulations..." she said to him, her hand resting on his forearm for a moment before she pulled back.
"I thought you were working as an Auror though...?" she asked, inclining her head to the side ever so slightly. Chuckling when he sent a small wave her way she shook her head, he hadn't changed that much since their time together in school. As it turned out there were a lot of things which hadn't changed, all those old feelings were suddenly rushing back and she was helpless to stop them. It made her happy to know she'd be seeing him so much more often now he was a Professor.
"I've been teaching here for 3 years now...Professor Dumbledore liked that I had so much experience in living in the Muggle World, figured I had something good I could bring to the class..." she said with a small shrug. It was her first hand experience that Dumbledore had said helped her to get the job, there really hadn't been any contest with the other applicants.

if music be the food of love, play on. The sound of her voice sent tingles up John's neck. His eyes adverted to her hand as she tucked her hair behind her ear, a sweet smile remaining on her face. Mm, yes. She was exactly like John had remembered. He smiled back warmly at her as she offered her congratulations, and as her hand met the sleeve of his black jacket, something like an electric current pulsed through his body.
"Thanks," he said, smiling back at her. "Yes, I was an Auror, but how could I refuse becoming a Professor?" he looked around at the walls surrounding him, knowing the history and knowledge that remained within them. "But, I see that you still keep in close contact with Harriet," he smiled, his eyes focusing back on Katherine.
Three years?! Wow! John knew that she was good, but to reach the level of Professor at the age of twenty was absolutely astonishing. "Wow, Katherine," he said, absolutely breathless. "That's amazing. Well, Albus sure did make the right decision hiring you."
He looked over at his old friend, wondering what else about her was the same and what had changed. "Katherine," John said, his voice almost sounding like it was a question. "Would you like to come and have a drink with me sometime? You know, to catch up. Just like old times." He moved in a bit closer to her, biting his bottom lip. He didn't know if he was being a bit too forward, but the fact that the two of them were meeting now - after not seeing each other for so long - was too good of an opportunity to pass up. "Maybe at the Three Broomsticks on Friday night?" He shrugged, desperately hoping that she would say yes.

Katherine was beginning to feel silly due to the fact she couldn't wipe the smile from her face. She did begin to wonder why Harriet never mentioned anything about John starting work here...though knowing her friend she had neglected to tell Katherine on purpose. Shaking her head she silently vowed to have a nice long chat with her friend later. "Of course, she's still one of my best friends. Plus with some of the stuff we know about each other, there's no way we could part ways now..." she joked.
She smiled at John and shrugged her shoulders lightly, "For the first year I was training under the last Professor before he retired, so if we're being technical it's only been 2 years...but they've been the best 2 years of my life since school." Katherine explained, meaning every last word. Teaching had never been something she'd consider doing as a career, but now she couldn't imagine doing anything else. Looking at John she smiled, "Professor Dumbledore has been very kind...I owe him a lot. He's stuck his neck out to stand by me a lot more times than I can count over these years..." she explained, frowning ever so slightly. "There are a lot of people who consider Muggle Studies necessary..." she chuckled lightly.
There'd been many threats to her life over the past couple years from former students, and parents. In many ways she was considered a blood traitor due to her love of Muggles, but Katherine didn't care and Dumbledore trusted her enough to have her teach, that was really all that mattered to her.
As John said her name, Katherine had to admit she liked the way it sounded coming from him. Then when he asked her to go for a drink with him this Friday, she smiled softly and nodded her head causing her curls to fall over her shoulders, "A drink sounds wonderful John." she said sincerely, reminding herself to breathe when he moved that little bit closer to her, his height causing her to have to look up. "It'll be just like old times..." she agreed with a nod of her head. "We're you wanting to meet here or walk down together?" she asked, inclining her head to the side slightly.

if music be the food of love, play on. John laughed. Yes, he remembered quite well. Harriet and Katherine were almost joint at the hip during their time at Hogwarts, and so knowing secrets about the other one sort of came with the title of 'best friends'. "I suppose, yes." he grinned back at Katherine, feeling more alive than he had done in the past five years.
John leant back against the teacher's desk as Katherine filled him in on what had happened in the years that they hadn't seen each other. "Wow, Katherine," John said, amazed by her words. "That's wonderful." She had certainly kept herself busy, and John was indebted to Dumbledore for, inadvertently, bringing the two of them together again. "I guess the both of us owe Dumbledore a lot now." John meant it in more ways than one.
At the sound of Katherine's acceptance, John could have done a dance. A very, very dorky dance, but a dance nonetheless. "Walking down together sounds like a good idea. Safety in numbers." Well, that, and he'd also get to spend another half an hour with Katherine. At this point, spending any time whatsoever with Katherine was good.
As much as he didn't want to leave Katherine right now, John still had a crazy amount of unpacking to do - and he still had to sift through the curriculums for Monday's classes. "I hate to say it," he said, shifting his weight from the table to a standing position. "but I have to go and start unpacking." He regretted the words as soon as they came out of his mouth. "But, it was so good to see you again, Katherine."
John was not a very affectionate person. He rarely had contact with anyone outside of a handshake, but as he pulled Katherine into a a sort of 'goodbye' hug, something about it felt right. The way Katherine fit into his arms - and she smelled so good! The electricity was pumping like adrenaline through John's body and he no longer wanted to let go. But, seemingly out of awkwardness, he let go and smiled at Katherine. "I'll see you again soon."

"Walking down together sounds like a good idea. Safety in numbers."
Katherine felt a smile spread over her pretty face as she nodded her head in agreement. Suddenly she was looking forward to Friday a lot more than usual and knew for a fact that it was because she was going to get to spend some quality time with John. "It's a date." she said, her words sending a wave of nervousness through her. Naturally she hadn't meant it in that way but her feelings made it hard to ignore how much she liked the sound of it being an actual date.
That wasn't likely to be the case though, she was adamant he not find out how she felt. The last thing she wanted now she had John back in her life was to lose his friendship, she'd like him to be around in whatever capacity he wanted.
When he stood and announced it was time to leave due to the amount of packing he still had left, Katherine could barely conceal the look of disappointment on her face. She smiled and nodded her head in understanding though, "Sounds like you have a fun night ahead of you..." she teased, packing and unpacking had to be the most tedious things in her mind, hence why if she ever went travelling she always went light.
"It was good to see you to John, thanks for coming by.." she said, it really hadn't been a pleasant surprise seeing him here. John pulled her in for a hug, and although she was surprised Katherine went into his arms willingly. Her entire hummed in delight as she unconsciously inhaled his scent, allowing it to flood all of her senses. Something about being held in his arms like this felt so right and she was reluctant to part, though she did and quickly gathered herself, smiling up at John, "See you Friday John." she said softly, her hands finally dropping from his arms to her sides.

if music be the food of love, play on. "It's a date."
John's heart began to swell. Yes, indeed, it was kind of going to be like a date. There was only the minor factor that John was absolutely crazy about Katherine and she had no idea. He wondered if their friendship was going to bloom into one of those office romances, but he soon put the thought out of his head. He was older than Katherine, and she was his sister's best friend. Well, that, and she didn't quite fancy him the way he did her. Not to his knowledge anyway.
John laughed. "It's going to be amazing. Just me and my possessions; just how everyone wants to spend their Friday night."
Only one week to go until next Friday. John would be counting down the minutes. "It was great to see you, too." he said, meaning every word of it. The prospect of coming to teach at Hogwarts was so daunting, but having Katherine here would make it so much easier to deal with. "See you on Friday, Katherine." His mind was screaming in protest as John turned away from the lovely woman in front of him and headed towards the door. Quiet, he told himself, there'll be plenty more opportunities to see her.He took one more look at Katherine, standing at the front of the classroom looking as wonderful and lovely as she was in her school days. With a pang in his heart, he shut the door behind him and made his way down towards his new headquarters. He was already missing her.[/blockquote][/blockquote] [ ooc: should we leave it there? i have another idea for a thread with these two. <3 ]
