Finally, school was out for the summer. The weather was nice and everyone was excited to get away from Hogwarts for a while, mostly for homework reasons. The only person who loathed summer was Severus Snape, who was sitting in a compartment alone. He'd been one of the first people to board the train but it wasn't because he was excited to leave; it was simply easier for him to find his own compartment than to find a compartment with people who didn't want him around. At least this way, he ensured that he'd have a decent seat without being gawked at or made fun of the entire way back to the station. He expected to see his mother at the gate but it was never a touching affair. His mother had grown cold after years of dealing with his father and this coldness had extended to him.
His dark hair hung in curtains around his face as he looked out the window. Students were still boarding the train and, as of yet, he hadn't seen any Slytherins who would begrudgingly share a compartment with him. A blonde-haired girl with long braids poked her head inside but upon seeing him, she left, disgusted. He returned to looking out the window, almost hoping that he didn't see Lily, although he wished that he would. That incident with Black, Potter, and the others was too much for him to handle. It's all their fault I called her that awful name, he cursed inwardly. She hadn't so much as looked at him since then and he'd been planning on going to Gryffindor Tower and speaking with her but he just couldn't muster up the courage. Perhaps he could gain it over the long, miserable summer he had ahead of him. Perhaps... he could visit her. A scene began in his head, a memory of sitting on the broken swing set in mid-July, a red-haired girl running over to him.
His heart physically hurt and he couldn't take the silence anymore. For once, he prayed that someone would come through those compartment doors and sit with him, make his life hell so that he could forget everything. Lily was all that he'd had left, and now she was history. All of a sudden, the doors opened. Severus glanced up to see who it was, expecting the person to just turn around and leave upon seeing the lone occupant.
