Week one back at school and where was he? In detention. Go figure. It was just bloody typical that the first night he would try and sneak out would be the one night that Filch and that bloody cat would be out, wouldn't it? He hadn't made it down the first flight of stairs before they'd appeared, cat at the top, Filch at the bottom. Cornered between them. Why hadn't he used the cape or the map? Well, he had plenty of time to sit and ponder that now, didn't he?
Sighing, James rested his chin on his arms, staring out across the room. He was here on time, what more could they ask for? Whoever was supposed to be doing this detention better turn up quick, because James wasn't going to just sit here and do nothing if they didn't show. No freaking way!
At a noise behind him, James looked up quickly, turning to face the door. It wasn't a professor though, it was another student. "You mean I don't have to spend the next two hours alone? That's a relief."

Sighing Mary made her way down the hall with McGonagal's hand gripped about her shoulder. By the expression on the woman's face you could tell she was hardly happy, pretty far from in fact. "Miss Macdonald I am appalled. Finding you sneaking about in the Abandoned classrooms when you were supposed to be in Care of Magical Creatures. It is shameful." The woman said, shaking her head as if to say she was ashamed.
"Well it isn't like I was going to skip all of class, I just had some business to take care of first...nothing too bad eh Mum? It weren't like I was gunna do anything bad like drinking or drugs. Just meetin a friend to get my notes back. That was all." She murmured and shrugged. The hand tightened. "Regardless of what you were or were not doing. It is against school policy to skip any class for any reason other than illness or injury. And please Miss Macdonald you are a Scottish lady not a gutter snipe, please speak as such.
They entered the detention room and Mary smirked at James' expression. "Right-O mum. I'll work on that I will. Thank ye for not being too harsh on me. I'll make you proud and I won't be a delinquent any more. I cross my heart and hope to die." She responded and watched the older Scottish woman exit with a roll of her eyes, leaving her and James Potter alone.
"Well, well, well, James I have to say I'm quite proud of you. Just got back to school and already causing mischief. Good on ye sexy." She winked obviously teasing before she sat on the table next to him. "So Messr Potter. What shall you do to entertain me." she chuckled flicking a strand of red hair out of her eyes.

James heard footsteps coming down the hall towards the room he was in and he hoped that it would mean that his detention could be done and over with already. He turned, surprised to see Mary Macdonald being guided through the door. A grin crossed his face as he listened to the exchange between the two of them, then ducked a glare from McGonagall that was aimed his way. As soon as she was gone, James grinned at Mary.
"Well, well, well, James I have to say I'm quite proud of you. Just got back to school and already causing mischief. Good on ye sexy."
"It looks like I'm not the only one in the bad books tonight, eh MaryMac?" He shoved his chair back as she sat on the table next to him. "Hmm, entertainment, entertainment. What do you fancy doing to wile the time away?"
A detention was never fun on your own, but with a friend it was brilliant. "I wonder who's going to be overseeing tonight..." He glanced over to the door. "I vote, whenever they look away we start dancing behind their back and try not to get caught." He grinned, sending a wink Mary's way.

She grinned back with that charming, carefree smile that she was practically known for. It was actually quite hilarious that they both had detention already and it wasn't even very far into the year yet. Oh the joys of being a rebel. Teachers tended to dislike you and keep an eye on you more than the other students, but Mary couldn't deny that she liked the attention. And she knew James liked the attention as well.
"I'm always bad James, I'm a bad bad habit. There ain't nothin for it." She giggled winking to him before leaning her folded arms on her crossed legs for support. "Hmmm if we're lucky we'll get someone like Remus. Maybe we can talk him into lettin us go early aye? Or at least sneakin us somethin fun to do.."
It would be either Remus or...someone else they knew quite well. The original red head herself, Lily Evans. But she doubted McGonagal would subject poor Lily to both of them together at the same time. Lily and Mary were absolute best friends but Mary was her opposite and thus they argued quite a bit. And when in the company of James, one of her other Best Friends. She tended to get a tad wild. "Hmmm funny. I like the way you think"

Okay so this wasn't the most ideal and productive way to spend ones evening but Lily accepted she had to do it anyway. All prefects had to take turns supervising detentions if one of the Professors was unable to do so, and she was only too happy to help out. After all, Lily liked to take her role as prefect seriously, just like with her studies she didn't do anything by halves. Tonight would only be one hour out of her strict studying schedule, but then again, if she could, she could always get in some studying during the detention. Though she highly doubted it to be possible now, especially considering who McGonagall had asked her to supervise.
James Potter and Mary Macdonald. Alone they were a handful, together, well lets just say the idea of being the one to supervise them made her feel a bit nauseous to say the least. Mary was one of her best friends, but that didn't mean she was looking forward to this detention anymore, no, she knew first hand what the red head was like. They were complete opposites in everyway, proven by how close she seemed to be with James. James. Lily halted outside the classroom door doing her best to ignore the nervous, confused sensation that coursed through her as she thought of him.
Shaking her head, Lily steeled herself. What had happened was in the past, a mistake, he knew it as well as her. In fact she doubted it had even slowed him down with the girls which again went to prove what she'd said to him in the closet. In a bid to forget him, forget that kiss they'd shared and the feelings it had ignited, Lily had finally accepted a date with none other than Charles Ecrington, a seventh year Ravenclaw. They'd met over the summer and hit it off right away, but Lily had refused the idea of a date time after time, her mind clearly on someone else despite her best efforts. However in the end she'd relented, in fact they'd just had their first date the night previous and everything had gone exceptionally well. He was funny, smart, mature and sophisticated and she liked him, though she was confused as to what he saw in her though she didn't bother to question it.
Steeling herself, Lily ran over McGonagall's instructions in her head once more and pushed open the classroom door. Stepping in she closed it behind her, and made her way silently to the front of the class, laying her books and bag on the teachers desk before pulling out her wand and finally turning to face Mary and James. "Okay, Professor Mcgonagall asked me to supervise..." she said softly, moving closer to them to stand closer but still a desk in front of their own. Waving her wand, the two tables she was stood in between filled with cauldrons from the potions classroom, and two buckets with soapy water and clothes appeared as well. "She's asked that you both clean these, by hand, and if you could please hand over your wands till it's done..." she said, preferring to ask them instead of just taking them with a summoning spell like the Professor had suggested.

James scoffed. "We're out of luck on that account. Remus is covering detentions tomorrow night, and they don't get made to cover two in a row." He wished it could have been Remus though, but most of the Professors were smart enough to know not to put Remus in charge of either James or Sirius during a detention. "Wishful thinking, though."
James stated his idea of what they could do to make the evening more fun, and he got a mark of approval from the girl on the desk. Now, all they needed to do was make sure that whoever it was didn't just sit there and face them the whole time. If they did, they'd need to find another way of distracting them...but how?
A few seconds later the door to the classroom opened again, and in place stood a familiar figure. Lily. Visions of what had happened before the summer flashed through his mind, followed by the memory of her harsh words, and he forced all emotion from his face, mask of steel in place. She'd made it quite clear what she wanted, and he'd damn well give her that.
He said nothing as she moved to the front of the classroom, close, but keeping distance between them. With a swish of her wand cauldrons and soapy water appeared, and Lily gave them their instructions. James rolled his eyes and flopped back in his seat. Typical. How many detentions had he spent scrubbed grungy cauldrons over the years?
"and if you could please hand over your wands till it's done..."#
James looked at Mary and raised an eyebrow. "Oh, well I don't know about that. Whatever would I choose to do such a thing for." He swung his legs up on the desk, intentionally kicking one of the buckets of water onto the ground in the process. "Whoops. I better use my wand to clean that up, hadn't I?" He didn't move though, just stayed where he was, eyes not moving away from Lily.

She rolled her eyes and pretended to be upset, pouting just a little. "Doesn't he know he has to coordinate with the times we get in trouble? Sirius should know that as well." she sighed and laid her back out on the table folding her arms behind her head and hearing the tell-tale crack of her spine that noted she had been a bit too hard on her body that week. She'd started warming her body up for the return of the Quidditch season and it appeared that her bones and aching muscles did not take kindly to shaking off the winter sleepiness.
She sat up straight as soon as she heard the door open, and was a tad disappointed to see her other best friend. Lily didn't look too pleased to see Mary and James sitting together, least of all in detention at the same time. "Lily Dear, what a nice surprise. Mary cooed with a smile, regardless of her slight disappointment she loved Lily and hoped that she wouldn't be too hard on the two criminals before her.
However, Lily went straight to business looking like she had just shoved a stick up her arse so she could rule over them both. Mary sighed and began tugging her wand from her back pocket when she looked at James who was looking at her skeptically before he stood. Mary was confused, what was he up to? But when the buckets dumped over and the soapy water crawled along the wood floor towards Lily's shoes Mary blushed.
If it had been anyone else but Lily she would have burst out laughing, but to see James be so mean to Lily was surprising. "James...ye didn't have to do that. She's only doin her job." Mary murmured handing her wand over to Lily and picking up the buckets. "I promise we won't be too much trouble. Though I'm not sure how much I can speak for his behavior." She stated to Lily fixing James with a surprised glare.

Lily didn't miss how different James seemed to be, standoffish almost and she figured it was only natural, considering what had occurred between them only last year. She offered Mary a smile as she readied herself to the front of the classroom, her friend making to hand Lily her wand from her back pocket. James though wasn't quite so co-operative. "Oh, well I don't know about that. Whatever would I choose to do such a thing for." he asked her before swinging his legs up onto the table and kicking down the buckets of soapy water she had conjured.
Gasping she moved back, feeling the warm water splash over her legs and wincing as she felt it splosh into her shoes. The soapy water, seeped over the wooden floor making a mess. Frowning Lily didn't move, instead just looked down at the mess James had made unable to believe he had done such a thing. Of course she'd known he would have been upset with her over what had happened, but to revert to being a complete jerk to her? No she hadn't been expecting that and to be honest she felt quite hurt by his treatment of her, maybe she had made the right decision in refusing to follow her feelings and not allowing herself to pursue a relationship with him.
Taking Mary's wand she forced a smile on to her face though it didn't touch her eyes at all. With the flick of her wand the buckets placed themselves on the table once more full again of soapy water and the water on the floor gone. "Accio wand..." she said, catching his wand with her free hand as it flew to her. For a moment her eyes locked onto James, and quashing her growing feelings for him she glanced away again and smiled softly. "Um, I've been told to give you your wands back at the end of detention and I'm sure you know what to do, so if you want to get started that'd be great." she said, clasping the wands tightly in her hand.
Moving to the front of the classroom she sat on the steps there that led up to the Professor's desk. Picking up one of her books she opened it to a marked page, lay the book on her lap and tried to focus on reading. That was seeming impossible though, she was restless and conflicted. So standing again, holding the book in her hand she began to slowly pace around the front of the classroom, her eyes drifting back to Mary, and lingering on James for a few moments.
