APPEARANCE: Remus stands around 5’8” and weighs around 120 pounds. Small and slight for his age, the impression of vulnerability is only reinforced by his closed-off body language, and things are hardly helped by his too-pale skin and deep-set eyes, which are too often ringed with the clear marks of insomnia. He is at the gawky stage of adolescence, all pointy elbows and gangly knees and too-long limbs, and often seems uncoordinated as a result. His eyes are an icy blue that slowly blurs into green as the full moon approaches, only to turn amber during his monthly transformations.

His hair is a deep ruddy brown, and forms slight curls as it begins to get longer. It grows ridiculously fast, and Remus normally has to trim it twice a week to hide its accelerated rate of growth; the night after a transformation it is not uncommon for his hair to have gained several inches literally overnight. Similarly, his facial hair grows incredibly fast and Remus sometimes has to shave several times a day in the half-week lead up to the full moon.

Remus tends to dress in multiple layers and long sleeves even in summer; his frailty makes him more vulnerable to feeling cold (a handy excuse which everyone accepts which just so happens to be partially true) and more importantly it serves to cover up the multitude of livid scars and claw and bitemarks that litter his arms, shoulders and torso, including the terrible and inflamed scar from where he was bitten as a child that sits just above his left hip. He favours scarves for much the same reason; they serve to conceal the less obvious but still visible scars on his neck and shoulders

MIRROR OF ERISED: Remus would never admit this to anyone (even his fellow Marauders) but he would see himself standing as a human being under the moonlight. Though he knows intellectually that his condition is incurable, Remus can’t help but hope that one day he’ll be able to watch the full moon rise as he did as a boy without suffering agonizing pain.

PERSONALITY: Kind, somewhat shy and self-effacing, Remus Lupin is a gentle soul who, if left to his own devices, would have grown up to be a gentle and mild-mannered scholar. However the influence of his lycanthropic side on the development of his personality has brought out and accentuated those somewhat wolfish traits that were already there; though he doesn’t act on them Remus has all the instincts, drives and desires of an alpha – he is assertive, protective, possessive and can be ruthlessly aggressive when his anger is roused.

Due to his uneasy relationship with his status as a werewolf, however, Remus does his best to deny these instincts, acting instead in accord with the gentler and quieter sides of his nature. Studious and bookish, Remus loves learning for its own sake and has a natural patience and empathy for others that makes him a much desired tutor in the Gryffindor commonroom. He is always willing to extend a helping hand to others, and tries not to let prejudice or pre-judgement flavour his assessment of other people – as a werewolf, he has felt the sting of such treatment before.

Hidden behind his façade of stuffy and scholarly boffin Remus also has a wicked sense of humour and an inventive mind second to none. His meticulous nature means that those Marauder exploits that he organizes and designs are nearly foolproof, and no one has yet traced any of his schemes back to the Marauders or Remus personally with enough evidence to do anything, try as several teachers and students might.

HISTORY: Born to Romulus and Diana Lupin in early Spring of 1960, Remus Lupin had a quiet and peaceful childhood. Living out in the country as he did, he ran around and explored the local moors, bothered the chickens and ‘helped’ his mother out in the garden. However, this was all soon to change due to attention drawn to his father, Romulus Lupin, a maverick Auror who had a philosophy of capturing werewolves instead of killing them and then trying to rehabilitate them into society.

A powerful werewolf leader by the name of Fenrir Greyback who relied on Wizarding mistrust and mistreatment of werewolves to gain recruits found his recruiting and fearmongering frustrated by Romulus’ efforts, and so one full moon night in 1967 Greyback mauled the young Remus, marking him forever with the curse of lycanthropy as a warning and a threat to his father.

Though Remus survived the attack and his family stuck by him, his life was in many ways altered in the aftermath of his mauling by Greyback. Gone was the easy camaraderie and physical affection between him and his parents; a combination of aversion to his lycanthropy and a fear for his physical safety, as Remus had grown pale and sickly due to the strain the monthly transformations placed on his body.

As Remus approached his eleventh birthday, although they weren’t hopeful of any success, Remus’ parents wrote to Headmaster Dumbledore and explained the situation. Much to their surprise, the old man was willing to accept Remus as a student at Hogwarts after taking some precautions to ensure the safety of other students and extracting a set of promises from Remus that he would be careful and discreet for the safety of all involved.

After befriending Sirius Black during their first five minutes on the train by not judging him on his family name, Remus was dragged off to look for a carriage and within in met James Potter and Peter Pettigrew. By the end of the trip, their friendship was sealed and the seeds of what would become the Marauders had been sown.

Two years later, during the middle of their Third Year a combination of Sirius spotting Remus’ scar and James studying lunar cycles at the time and putting together the dates led to his friends discovering Remus’ “furry little problem”. Quick trips to the Black and Potter libraries later, what was later dubbed “Project Animagi” went into effect, culminating in more-or-less successful transformations during the first few weeks of their Fifth Year.
