It was that time of year. The leaves were falling off the trees and everything was getting ready to rot away leaving room for new things to grow in the coming Spring. Sometimes Maddie marveled at how Mother Nature worked perfectly in such a crazy and chaotic word. Her mind came back to talk of the new regime. Darn the Daily Prophet had reported some attacks at the very school. Most pupils received hasty owls from panicked parents, but Maddie was not one of those children who's parents doted over her. Her Mother and Father probably hoped that she was one of the victims.
She sighed as she walked around the lake. Her eyes squinting a little as the weak Autumn sun rays hit the water causing a blinding glare. The Fifth year cupped her hand over her eyes and looked out at the Lake, it was always a beautiful scene no matter what the weather. In Summer she longed for a swim, though there were rumours of merpeople, Giant Squids and Grindylows not to mention a few crazy creatures. Of course Maddison knew that they existed, being a pure blood she had heard of many tales of creatures. They were even taught about such creatures in Care of Magical Creatures lessons at the school. This was one of the few lessons that Maddi actually enjoyed at Hogwarts. The others were Art of Flying which she excelled at and Transfiguration. The Slytherin student had always wished she were an animagus.
The wind began to pick up and Maddi turned to walk back to the castle, but her blue eyes spotted movement up ahead. Squinting a little more, she could tell it was Kale Fontaine, someone she was once very close to. The two Slytherin students used to play together as children, both sets of Parents being very close friends meant that the two children saw a lot of each other. Maddison did not mind at first, she used to be bubbly and the fact that Kale was quite a quiet child fascinated her. At one stage she dreamt of marrying him when they had gotten older and when dreams were the only reason for a little innocent child's existence. But then Kale started to turn cold towards her. At first she did not know why, but then things became obvious. The terms Mudblood would escape from his lips and then the slight bullying began and that was the end of her dream. Of course Maddi still thought him very handsome and she missed what they once had, but deep down she knew he would never change his views and neither would she and so she left it at that. Breathing deeply, she awaited his presence.

A gentle wind picked up, disturbing the leaves that scattered across the lawns of Hogwarts. Reds and yellows and oranges swirled around each other, tumbling and weaving around each other and then eventually around shiny black shoes. Near emotionless blue eyes gazed down at them, brown hair falling down in front of them only to be brushed aside by a pale hand.
Kale Fontaine usually made it a habit of spending as much time outside as possible, detesting the hours spent in doors in musty classrooms or underground in their Common Room. The oppressiveness of having too many walls around him, not having enough room around him to feel as if he had enough personal space to be comfortable. The feeling of being trapped drove him crazy and, thus, drove him outside more often then not where he could enjoy the open space of the grounds.
And that’s how he found himself standing there now. His gaze watched the swirling leaves as they continued moving around him, floating further into the grounds as he watched, and before he knew it he was gazing at an all too familiar figure. Maddison MacKenzie, her name was engraved on his person the way an ingrained habit was. They had grown up together, spending more days then the Slytherin could count in each other’s company whilst their parents done whatever it was adults did together during those days. They had attended Hogwarts at the same time, were sorted into the same House and were inseparable. Eventually that easy friendship deepened, developed into something more for Kale. He began to look at his friend in a new, different light. One exciting and soul-clenchingly terrifying all at once…
But it seems good things can never last.
Whilst Maddie was strong enough to defy her parents, the young man wasn’t as strong. His parents lectured, ranted and debated in front of the all too willing ears of their son. The disgust and impatience with the Muggle world was pondered but readily accepted in light of such unwavering passion and loyalty. Whispers behind closed doors of a man amassing followers amongst those loyal purebloods who wanted their rightful place in the world inspired him, rekindling forgotten dreams and providing the spark to the inferno that would be his ambition. These beliefs took Kale down a different path to Maddie, the seductive whispers of power tempting him into the shadows, unable to fight the temptation. But despite all this, his feelings for the girl remained, possibly stronger then ever. They say you always want what you can’t have, and it was never truer. Now whenever he gazed into those beautiful blue eyes he burned on the stake of her judgement, and all the whilst he wished he could see them burn in a different way, eyes half-lidded and fiery with a different emotion whenever she gazed at him… His heart would race and attempt to escape it’s bony prison whenever he was close to her, much like it was now.
It was then that Kale realised his treacherous feet had carried him onwards and towards her whilst he was wrapped up in his thoughts. Cursing himself internally but not wanting to lose face, the Slytherin slowed his pace as he closed in on her. Wanting nothing more but to turn and flee, but knowing he couldn’t without losing faith, he breathed in deeply, yet subtly, before speaking.
“Hello, Maddie. How are you?” He asked in a slightly husky tone, hoping he sounded casual but fearing he had failed miserably.

Maddie did not understand why her tummy was doing somersaults right now, or why her mouth felt dry. All she could feel was a little annoyance and a lot of regret. Regret, an emotion she seemed to be feeling a lot lately. Kale was very handsome and yes she fancied him a lot. But he was also an obnoxious idiot who seemed to want to be a sheep. To be like her Parents. Maddies eyes burned, threatening to release the pain. The pain she felt towards her parents, the pain she felt at losing her childhood friend, though the lone SLytherin did not know why she let him bother her. He obviously could not care in the slightest about her or how she felt. It was so obvious to Maddie that Kale did not even miss her.
He was approaching her now, though he looked totally unhappy about it, as if he sensed that he had some superior need to come conflict himself upon her. Perhaps he felt a duty because their parents were friends. Maddie wiped a strand of hair from her face and sighed, ready to brave the onslaught that she had no doubt that she was about to receive.
“Hello, Maddie. How are you?” he asked casually, "as if you care!" she thought to herself angrily, though a huge part of her felt that she had no reason to be feeling angry towards him. He just followed his Parents footsteps like she had been expected to. "I am ok, you?" she asked feeling more than a little awkward. Her blue eyes darted t his before looking at her polished black shoes, school regulation of course and she smiled awkwardly before awaiting an answer.
