She wasn't quite sure how she had been going to end that sentence, but now he was prompting her to do so. "Free?" she phrased it like a question, but it wasn't, not really. She just wasn't sure she was allowed to think it.
She smiled appreciateively a little but when he he helped her out bit, and that he agreed with her. None of her immediate family understood why she preferred the outdoors when she had such a beautiful manor to live in.
Andromeda was surprised, she thought he would know more people than that. But the people you talked to were not always the same as your friends, something she understood only to well.
She watched as he moved into a more comfortable position. She remained like a ball, her knees pulled up close to her chest and her hands wrapping around them whenever they weren't holding something. She knew it didn't make a difference, but being closed off made her feel safer, more secure.
This type of conversing was new to her, the type that seemed focused on learning little details about the other person, stuff that would help you get to know them, not that type of thing she did all that often. It was this justification that made her feel better about stumbling over such a simple question.
"Care of Magical Creatures, or charms, depending on what mood I'm in." Charms were for days when she needed walls, Care of magical Creatures were for days when she needed to breathe.
She didn't want the conversation to become one sided, so she added, "And you?" She really did want to learn more about him, he was, someone she didn't want to forget in a hurry. And despite her discomfort she was actually enjoying herself. She liked talking to Ted. It felt, easy. Easier than talking to most people.
Notes:Obsessive Devotion by Epica is totally not the right muse for this post.

IT'S NOT THAT YOU CAN'T SEE THE FOREST FROM THE TREES - YOU'RE NEVER OUT IN THE WOODS ALONE Ted nodded his head, agreeing with Andromeda's choice of word. He had the feeling that being free was something that was of great importance to Andromeda - but, on the other hand, it wasn't his place to made judgements like that. "Yeah, definitely," he agreed, smiling over at the girl beside him.
Out of all the classes she could have picked! Ted couldn't help but laugh - it was the second thing they found they had in common. "Care of Magical Creatures is mine, too," he explained after a moment, a smile still lingering on his face. "Are you helping Kettleburn out with that student project she's running?" Maybe they would be seeing more of each other than they had originally anticipated. "I'm thinking of helping out," he shrugged, still not sure if he would actually follow through with it or not. "It kinda sounds like fun."
He wanted to ask more questions - he wanted to know if they had more things in common. After all, it wasn't every day that a Hufflepuff and a Slytherin found out they could actually get along, if you took away the prejudice and need for 'blood purity'. Ted found himself wanting to say these things to Andromeda, but somehow he couldn't quite find the right words. Instead, he thought of more questions to ask.
Ted shifted his weight again so that he faced Andromeda, with crossed legs. "Favourite colour?" he asked, his blue eyes sparkling under the small amounts of sunlight that seeped through the shady tree. He was starting to have a lot of fun, and all he could do was hope that Andromeda was feeling the same. After all, he didn't want to be held accountable for showing his new acquaintance a boring time.

The corners of her mouth turned up a little as he agreed with her, but otherwise she remained still. It had been difficult for her to say even that vague expression. And though she had gotten through it fine she felt it was best to move on to simpler stuff. But even these seemingly surface level questions held there own intimacy within a conversation, she felt.
She laughed along with him a little, feeling kind of relieved that she wasn’t the only one in the world who felt that way. Her sister’s had never understood why she liked that class, and neither did she. She tended to focus on classes that she thought would help in the future, and while it was interesting it wasn’t where she was planning on going with her life. But maybe that was why she liked it, it was her way of rebelling from the mold, even if it was just a little bit.
“I was, thinking about it.” She said with a shrug, the laughter beginning to dissipate. Actually, Professor Kettleburn had invited her specifically and she had been looking foreward to it. She didn’t know why she didn’t tell Ted this, other than that involved thinking about the future and that wasn’t something she wanted to do right now. But she would have to eventually.
She was glad when he asked her another question, because it took her away from her musings. “Blue,” she said after thinking about for a moment. It wasn’t hard, answering his questions, but it gave her something else to think about. Is that why she was talking to him, because he provided a distraction. This would have made things a lot simpler. But if all she needed was a distraction, then why did she blush every time he smiled at her, and when he was looking at her why was she appraising his very move? Why did her eyes keep drifting up to meet his, and why did her stomach feel light and her skin oddly warm...
She wondered if he found her answers boring. Her favorite colour couldn't be that interesting, could it? She wasn't really interesting. Bella and Cissa were, but not her. She wanted to say something interesting or exciting so ted wouldn't think she was zoning out of the conversation just because her answers were so short, but her mind came up blank. "Do you have any siblings?" she blurted out, though she instantly regretted it. the question was bound to double back on her, and that was one topic she had hoped to avoid completely.

IT'S NOT THAT YOU CAN'T SEE THE FOREST FROM THE TREES - YOU'RE NEVER OUT IN THE WOODS ALONE Ted couldn't help but smile. "Well, maybe I'll see you there, then," he replied, referring to to the Care of Magical Creature class project that was going on. The more Ted thought about it, the more he liked the idea of seeing Andromeda again - outside of Defence Against the Dark Arts.
"Blue's a good colour," he agreed, nodding his head slowly. "But yellow's better." He laughed and held up his school robes, showing off the nasty mustard yellow colour that told the world 'Hey! I'm in Hufflepuff!'. He pulled the collar of his robes up towards his hair. "Look, I'm a Chameleon," he joked, as both his hair and the robe were a similar colour.
Ted frowned. "Nope," he said, popping his lips on the 'p'. "I'm an only child. I was pretty lonely growing up," he chuckled. Not much had changed since. "But you've got two siblings, right? Bellatrix and... Narcissa?" He wasn't sure if he'd gotten the names right.
"I think Bellatrix hexed Diggory once." The words came out before Ted could even stop them. Great. Now he'd put his foot in it. Feeling his stomach drop and clench itself with guilt, Ted winced. His eyes snapped back to Andromeda to watch her reaction. "I'm sure he deserved it," he said reassuringly, trying to make a joke out of it. "I've hexed him a couple of times myself."
If it were anyone else, Ted wouldn't have felt the least bit of guilt for telling them their sibling went around hexing people. But, for some reason, he cared about how Andromeda was feeling. He didn't want his snarky comments to affect her, and for what he had just said he was truly sorry. Ted just didn't know how to put that apology into words.

She laughed again, and it sounded a lot more natural than any of her previous outbursts. In fact, she'd laughed more in the last half-hour than she probably had in the few months. Ted seemed to know how to be funny, but without being over the top obnxious. It was nice.
She had always wondered what it would have been like to be an only child. She couldn't imagine life without her sisters, but things had gotten so complicated lately that she couldn't help but wonder what would have happened had she been the only one...
"Uh, yes." She shifted, feeling uncomfortable again. She didn't know what else she was supposed to say about her sisters, so maybe she'd get lucky and this topic would end here.
Her stomach clenched when he mentioned that Bellatrix had cursed his friend. Would he blame her for her sisters deeds, like a lot of other people did?
"I'm sure he deserved it," She snorted. "Hardly, he probably only looked at her wrong." She froze, realizing with what she had just said. She slowly turned to face Ted, her face clearly betraying her shock and confusion, lloking for confirmation that she had spoken these words out loud. She doubted Ted had any love for Bella, he would probably either hate of fear her like any other muggleborn. But she never told anyone anything about the secret feelings she held against her sister. Bella was clever, it was what had kept her from being connected to any of her littkle—pranks. She couldn't imagine what she would do if she found out Andromeda was betraying her. Though she probably be more concerned with the fact that she was hanging out with a muggleborn than anything else. Her heart increased at the thought and she had to look away from him a second as she forced her fear away. Ted couldn't see that, he couldn't see her weakness.
Hopefully he would not repeat her words to anyone. It wasn't like she had said anything horrible, in fact, if she hadn't freaked out so much he may not have thought anything of it at all. Not that it would do her any good now. She took a deep breath and forced herself to look at ted with rather forced smile.

IT'S NOT THAT YOU CAN'T SEE THE FOREST FROM THE TREES - YOU'RE NEVER OUT IN THE WOODS ALONE Ted couldn't help but grin like an idiot at the sound of Andromeda's laugh. It was good to know that he could make her laugh - something that would probably be key if they were to continue a friendship of sorts (and Ted was certainly hoping that they would). But not only that; the small sound of it was not enough. Ted found himself wanting to hear more - no, needing to hear more of it.
As Andromeda snorted and remarked at how Diggory would have only done the slightest thing, a wave of relief washed over him. He was glad that she didn't suddenly just get up and walk away from him, but as her expression turned to shock, and then confusion, Ted's heart clenched tightly. What had he done?
He had no idea that Andromeda was only struggling internally with her own words, instead of his. Ted felt like it was his problem, too - one that he had created unnecessarily. He returned her forced smile, unsure of what to say to make the situation better.
"Sorry. I didn't mean to say that out loud.. I'm sure she's actually a lovely person," he managed to get out through strangled thoughts. "And it is true, though. I have hexed Diggory on occasion," he couldn't help but adding, smiling a bit in desperate hope that it would ease the tension. Well, it was true. The git snored like a cat eating gravel while being hit by a steamroller. Repeatedly.
Curiosity burned at the helm of his throat. Was Andromeda close to her sisters, then? Ted had so many more questions to ask Andromeda: what was her family like? Did she like her sisters? But, he felt as if asking any questions relating back to her family and the situation that Ted had just created would be a bad idea.
"Mind if I call you 'Meda, then?" he asked instead, raising an eyebrow at her as she turned away from him. There was something amazing about the name Andromeda - it was interesting and unique, just like the girl who possessed the name. It was better than plain old 'Ted Tonks', that was for sure. Only problem was, it was a bit of a mouthful to say. He hoped that she wouldn't mind; after all, isn't that what friends did? Give each other nicknames?

Andromeda couldn't help but feel relieved with the way he responded. He still thought that he had offended her, and not that she had let something slip she shouldn't have. She could let it go now, get away from these—dangerous waters—a phrase she had read in a muggle book once.
But a part of her didn't want too. A part of her wanted to let Ted know what Bella was really like, who her sister really was. She remembered the little Hufflepuff girl, and shuddered. No, you didn't tell people things like that. If he knew all the things Bella had done, the people her sister associated with, he'd probably never want to see her again. And she wouldn't blame him.
She managed a weak smile when he talked about Diggory. "I hope you weren't too mean to him." she said, a small laugh breaking through towards the end. "Should I be worried about being hexed by you as well?" She grinned, kind of surprsied that she had said something like that, but also a little proud. She was getting better at this.
She thought for a minute when he asked her if he could call her Meda. Mostly only her family called her that, though a few other Sytherins called her it as well and she hadn't minded much. So if she could tolerate them using that nickname she could certainly tolerate Ted. Besides, she liked the way Meda sounded coming out of his mouth. It made her smile. "Sure, but only if I get to call you Ted." Technically she already refferred to him as Ted, since that's what she first learned his name as. Still though, it would be nice to know she had oficial permission.

IT'S NOT THAT YOU CAN'T SEE THE FOREST FROM THE TREES - YOU'RE NEVER OUT IN THE WOODS ALONE There it was. That beautiful laugh again that sent chills down Ted's spine (in a good way). I could get used to this, Ted thought to himself as Andromeda's grin shone through. "Trust me," Ted said, joining in on her laughter, "if you'd ever heard this guy snore, you'd hex him too."
He pretended to think about her question for a moment, trying to come up with a clever answer. Nothing came to mind. "Well, only my friends have to worry about being hexed," he hinted, unable to wipe the smile off of his face. "I know they'll forgive me in the morning, see," he explained further, using his hands to gesture. "So you tell me, should you be worried?" It was a sly way of getting the answer he wanted, but it would work all the same.
He burst out laughing. "Yes, I suppose you can call me Ted." It was his name, after all.
Just as Ted was about to lie down under the tree, the bell signalling that lunch was over rang out and loud over the school grounds. Ted's heart sank; he didn't want this lunchtime to end. He looked over at Meda to see if she looked as crestfallen as he felt inside.
"What class do you have now?" Ted asked ask he levied himself off the ground and onto his feet, pulling his school satchel up off the ground and onto his shoulder. He didn't know if walking her to class was out of the question - but he'd been lucky so far, maybe his luck hadn't quite run out yet.

She tried to imagine Amos Diggory, a boy she knew more by sight and sound than anything else, snoring and Ted hexing him. It was a rather amusing image.
She didn’t know how to respond to that question, and was forced to look at her feet again. Was he her friend? Andromeda wasn’t even sure she knew what that word meant anymore. They got along sure, and she felt more comfortable around him than most people after their short little conversation, but was that what made a friend? But then she remembered how he had come to her, even though she was a Syltherin and a Black, and had turned him down; he’d still talked to her, accepted her. If he wasn’t a friend than he was certainly someone, someone who deserved some sort of acknowledgment. “I—I think so.” She choked on the words bit but managed a week smile as she looked at him again.
Then the bell rang. Andromeda whirled around, startled. She had forgotten that it was only lunch, and now they had classes to go to. She sighed. She had been enjoying this moment immensely, and she was sure part of her hoped it would continue long into the afternoon. But of course it must come to an end. Now it was back to the world where she was a Slytherin and he a hufflepuff, her a Black and him a muggleborn. And she would go back to being the shy, cowardly girl who couldn’t break out of her sister’s shadow. The thought left her feeling heavy, whereas Ted had made her feel warm and light and wonderful…
“Arithmancy.” She heaved, some of the heaviness seeping into her voice.

IT'S NOT THAT YOU CAN'T SEE THE FOREST FROM THE TREES - YOU'RE NEVER OUT IN THE WOODS ALONE Ted couldn't help but smile at her answer. It had taken a moment, but Ted was almost glad for the time it took - Meda had definitely put in some thought towards the answer she had given and Ted couldn't have been happier. All his 'mudblood' worries were over; if Andromeda Black could be his friend, Ted could well forget any hard feelings he'd ever had about that. "Just the answer I was looking for," he said as his heart flipped in his chest.
"Arithmancy?" he repeated with a frown on his face. That wasn't a good sign. Ted had Potions down in the dungeons, which meant it would be a bit impractical to walk Andromeda to class. "You sound like you don't want to go."
As he stood up and slung his school satchel over his shoulder, he offered his hand down to Andromeda, to help her up from sitting on the ground. "Ah well," he said, grinning anyway, "you can walk me to Potions instead."
He began walking towards the castle, Andromeda by his side and a great big smile on his face. Today had been a lot better than he had first expected it to be - what with having to break up a stupid fight right before class. The two of them jostled in the crowd, all of whom were trying to get back to their next class, but eventually Ted and Andromeda came to a halt in front of the staircase down to the dungeons.
"Lunch again tomorrow?" he asked, looking into her deo brown eyes, hoping for the same 'yes' he'd been lucky enough to hear earlier on today. "Same place?"

She just shrugged. She actually did like Arithmancy, but she did feel like she wasn't really in the mood for it right now. But there was no use getting worked over it so she quared her shoulders and prepared to leave.
She stopped when Ted talked. "Oh," she felt a little guilty for not even thinking about. "alright." She answered, and tried not to feel apprehensive about what walking with inside the school with him might mean. The time actually passed quiet pleasantly, a few people gave them odd looks, but it didn't seam to bother Ted much so though she was blushing madly she tried not to let it bother her either.
It was much too soon when the arrived the staircase that signaled their parting. She found herself staring directly at ted, and this time she didn't blush. Her mouth parted slightly as she considered his request. She'd been lucky, nobody had called her out on her—companion—yet, but if she continued to push her luck someone was bound too. But this had been the most fun she had in a while, and the thought of never doing it again, never seeing Ted again in that sense, left her feeling strangely depressed.
"Yes." Her voice came out stronger than it usually did, she found herself staring at ted for a moment longer before blushing and turning to head up the stairs. She paused though, turning around and facing him again, this time with a small smile on her lips.
"Thankyou." she said, and she meant it, then she turned away again and continued up stairs, quickly vanishing from sight.
