so goodbye for a whileI'M OFF TO EXPLORE EVERY BOUNDARY AND EVERY DOOR Okay, so it wasn't exactly a secret that Lachlan wasn't an academic. He never really did well in anything, really, unless it came to eating. He could eat Jabba the Hut under the table - but it wasn't like any of his pureblood friends understood his muggle references.
But, fortunately, that was where Emily had come in. She was a fresh face amongst the wizarding world that just seemed to get where he was coming from. It was Lachlan's good fortune that the two of them were still friends after their brief time dating. Sometimes, people just knew when they were meant to be friends, as opposed to lovers. Lachlan and Emily were two of the sort, and as of late, the muggle-borns had been spending a lot more time with each other.
Not that Lachlan would pick anyone else to spend his time with, but as the times were, the muggle-born children were almost forced to stick together. The segregation between purebloods and muggles - or, in the case at Hogwarts, Slytherins and Gryffindors - was getting out of hand.
Previously that morning in Herbology, Lachlan had asked Emily to meet him at the Duelling Classroom an hour before curfew, so he could go over the stuff he had learnt the week before. And basically, Lachlan needed all the help he could get.
Patiently, Lachlan waited outside the classroom, spinning his wand between his fingers as he looked left and right for any sign of Emily, eventually seeing her in the distance. He couldn't help it - a big grin spread wide on his face and he lifted his hand up over his head, waving at Emily.

Emily was glad her and Lachlan had arranged to meet, it gave her a good excuse to leave behind her Potions homework. Not that she was struggling with it, she simply felt she'd been working on it all day and she was only too glad to leave it behind. Lachlan though was the perfect person to help take her mind off it, he was one of her dearest friends, and slightly crazy to match.
Sure they'd dated, and not many people understood how they were still friends but that was simply how Lachlan and her worked, they'd never been able great as a couple and worked better as they were now. She was nothing if but thankful to have him in her life, Lachlan knew just how to make her forget anything was wrong, he could make her smile even more so than usual.
With things as they were outside of Hogwarts, and the growing predjudice towards Muggle's and Muggle Borns, they were all starting to stick together, Muggle-Borns that was. Safety after all was in numbers like they said, staying alone for too long, even now in Hogwarts was never a good idea, today you never knew who was watching you, waiting to show you what your rightful place was in this world.
As she rounded the corridor, Emily spotted Lachlan waiting down near the duelling classroom for her, and her smile widened. "Hey you..." she called out as she returned the wave and approached him, "Your looking rather suspicious..." she teased, as she came to a stop in front of the classroom, referring to the fact he was stood there alone, twirling his wand between his fingers. "So shall we go in?" she asked.

so goodbye for a whileI'M OFF TO EXPLORE EVERY BOUNDARY AND EVERY DOOR Lachlan pretended to be taken aback at her comment about him looking suspicious. "Me?" he questioned, putting his hand on his chest in a very lady-like manner. "Suspicious? Whatever can you mean." He flashed a grin and winked at his friend. He and Emily had always gotten along so well, even after they had broken up.
"Yeah, sounds good." He held out his arm for Emily to take, and together they walked into the old Duelling Classroom together.
Granted, the classroom had been in good use over the past year and a half; ever since the first attack on a muggle train-station back in 1974. But, since the beginning of the school year only three weeks ago, the classroom had barely been touched.
"So," Lachlan started, moving his fringe out of his eyes and pushing the sleeves of his muggle jumper up, revealing his forearms. "I'm pretty useless at the basic things, so maybe if we start from there?" He shrugged, looking over at his partner who was standing opposite him about five metres away. "If you cast Expelliarmus," he made a swishing motion with his wand, "I'll try to block it. Shall we give it a go?"
There were one of two ways this could go. The first, Lachlan would succeed and successfully manage to block the spell with Protego. The second, Lachlan would fail and be blasted into the wall behind him. The chances of him failing were much higher.

When Lachlan pretended to look all but offended by her comment, Emily rolled her eyes good naturedly and shook her head, laughing lightly, "Yeah like your Mr Innocent..." she teased, poking her finger into his side, before sticking her tongue out at him. It never failed to make her smile at just how easy it was to be friends with Lachlan, there were no pressures or expectations, they were just friends and neither of them would have it any other way. As she linked her arm through his she smiled and let him lead her into the duelling classroom, where thanks to last year she and the rest of the student population had spent an awful lot of time learning how to protect themselves.
With a nod of her head, Emily shrugged off her denim jacket and tossed it aside beside the wall, before pulling the hair tie from around her wrist and putting her hair up into a messy pony tail. "Sounds fine to me...." she said as she finished and pulled her wand out, holding it steady in her hand. "Ready when you are jeeves." she smiled, taking the correct stance. Duelling had to be something she'd never admit to enjoying, Duelling classes happened to be the ones she looked forward to the most aside from Potions and DADA.
When she was certain Lachlan was ready, she shot him a small smile then without missing a beat, swished her wand in the correct manner and called out, "Expelliarmus..." directing her wand straight at her friend, making sure she didn't put too much effort behind the spell, the last thing she wanted was to send him through the wall. She hoped that didn't happen

so goodbye for a whileI'M OFF TO EXPLORE EVERY BOUNDARY AND EVERY DOOR Okay! This was it. Lachlan was about to re-learn how to defend himself. This was probably one of the most useful things he was ever going to learn. Who knew when his time would be up? Lachlan tried not to think about it as he shifted his stance and got ready for the oncoming spell. "Alright!" he yelled, grinning, "Let's do this!"
As Emily yelled out Expelliarmus! from the other side of the room, Lachlan's mind went conveniently blank. What was the spell he needed to use again? Protegus? Protegio? He winced. "Protegus!" Lachlan yelled back in response, his voice bold and brave.
Of course, the spell didn't block anything and Lachlan was hit square in the chest. He was lifted off his feet and felt a small burning sensation where the spell had hit him. He came crashing down against the wall behind him, landing on his backside. "Ow," he groaned, rubbing his hand against his back.
"Okay," he said, his voice croaky, "Let's try that again. What's the spell I need?" He looked up at Emily, hoping that she knew what he was meant to be doing; because he sure didn't. Lachlan's eyes swept the classroom, looking for any sign of what his made up spell did. Eventually, his eyes landed on a table propped up against the side of the room, and a small bubble-like shield had been created against one of it's legs. Oh well. At least Lachlan now knew how to protect tables from danger.

Emily called out her spell, watching as it fired towards Lachlan and when he called out the wrong spell she covered her face with her hands. Crouching down on the floor she finally peered through her fingers, "Are you okay?" she called to Lachlan, biting down on her bottom lip she quickly stood and made her way across the classroom, all the while trying to hold back an amused smile at the sight of him on the ground. "You numpty, the spell was supposed to be Protego." she said holding out her hands to help him up.
As he stood she chuckled, glad she hadn't hurt him too much before turning on her heel and moving her way back across the classroom to resume her previous position, her eyes catching on a table off to the side of the room. Well apparently Lachlan had called out a spell, she laughed lightly and shook her head, turning to face her friend once more, raising her wand. In her experience, this sheild spell could go two ways once she fired her own spell at it. Her spell would either completely disappear upon touching the sheild or it would bounce back and hit her, either way at least it meant he'd managed a sheild.
"Ready?" she asked, blowing a strand of her from her face she swished her wand in the correct manner, "Expelliarmus!" she called out, watching the spell leave her wand and fly at Lachlan, all the while praying he'd get up the sheild, she didn't want to knock him over again.

so goodbye for a whileI'M OFF TO EXPLORE EVERY BOUNDARY AND EVERY DOOR Lachlan smacked his hand against his forehead. Of course it was Protego. "Did I mention that I knew that?" Lachlan said, holding Emily's hands as he struggled to his feet. "Because I knew that." He grinned at her. He sure was a bit of an idiot sometimes.
Lachlan's eyes followed Emily as she walked across to the other side of the room. He could definitely remember why the two of them had dated; she was absolutely stunning, and with a wonderful personality to boot. But sometimes, two people were just better off as friends.
"I'm ready!" he yelled back, rolling up his sleeves again. "But the question is, are you ready!" he yelled cheekily. He heard Emily yell out Expelliarmus! and Lachlan braced himself for the oncoming spell. Protego. That was the spell he needed. "Protego!" Lachlan yelled in return, flicking his wand in Emily's direction. Almost in slow motion, Lachlan watched as a clear-blue shield erupted out of the end of his wand, protecting his torso and upper legs from the spell. Upon contact, the Expelliarmus spell disappeared entirely, leaving Lachlan feeling victorious.
"Emily!" Lachlan yelled, jumping up and down with excitement. "I did it!" he ran over to her and hugged her, all in the name of excitement. "Okay, let's do it once more, and then can we move onto something else?"

"I believe you sweetie, not many people would," Emily chuckled, as Lachlan told he'd known what the spell was. As she called out the spell she watched in delight as it fired towards Lachlan, and he managed to get his shield up before her spell hit him. Clapping her hands she cheered and jumped up, laughing as he mirrored the action before running towards her and hugged her tightly. "I knew you could," she told him, returning the embrace tightly, laughing lightly at how happy he seemed to be over the accomplishment.
"Okay one more time..." she nodded in agreement smiling up at Lachlan as they parted. Brushing a lock of hair from her face she clapped her hand on his arm, her eyes dancing with delight as her smile widened, "I actually have a few other spells we could try if your running low on ideas." she told him happily. She hadn't played with any of them since her last duelling lesson which had been too long ago, so she was itching to try some of them out once more.
Resuming her previous position she looked at Lachlan and nodded, "Come on then buddy...chop chop." she said teasingly, ordering him to get back in his old position. After a few more moments passed by she released a breath then quickly called out "Expelliarmus..." keeping her fingers crossed by hers side, she watched as the spell fired towards her friend across the room.

so goodbye for a whileI'M OFF TO EXPLORE EVERY BOUNDARY AND EVERY DOOR Lachlan nodded eagerly. The buzz from having done something right for once was still going through him like a jolt from a lightning bolt, and Lachlan was eager to feel more of it. "Teach me all of them!" he said, almost breathless. "But, after I master this one. Because you know I will." He quickly moved away from Emily and resumed his stance.
Okay. This was it. Lachlan had to really prove that he could do this, and that his duelling abilities weren't just a fluke, or a stroke of good luck. "Protego!" Lachlan boomed, brandishing his wand in the direction of the oncoming spell. And, just like clockwork, the spell vanished into thin air after hitting the almost-invisible shield that Lachlan had made. Grinning from ear to ear, he looked over at Emily, "See?" he said, laughing, "Told you I knew it!"
"Okay, so which other ones do you know?" he asked Emily, the excitement level rising in his voice. "Oh, and by the way, thanks for helping me with this. I know you probably have a heap-load more work to do, but yeah." Lachlan never really was good at thanking people, and so his cheeks flushed bright red. He wanted to tell Emily just how much he appreciated it, but somehow, couldn't find the words.
"So," Lachlan said after a few minutes of silence, "how are you, Em?" It had been a while since the two of them had properly caught up and he wanted to know how everything was with her. "Did you have an okay summer break?"

Emily couldn't help but smile brightly at Lachlan, he seemed extremely happy with himself over his accomplishment. His smile was contagious she found, even when she often got annoyed with him, she'd never be able to stay mad for too long. As she adjusted the sleeves on her top, she looked back up at Lachlan, surprised he was thanking her. Smiling slightly she shrugged and shook her head, "Don't think on it...I'm happy to be here helping." she told him truthfully before she popped the handle of her wand between her teeth and began to adjust the tie in her hair, it had loosened a little.
Finally taking the wand back in her hand she looked at Lachlan and shrugged her shoulder a little, restraining a frown, "Break was good, as always though it went by too quick but...I'm happy to be back...I just worry about my parents. With everything that's going on..." she trailed off looking away from Lachlan and shaking her head, forcing a smile onto her face "How was yours?". She figured most students were worried about their parents at this time, she was no different. "Okay I have this one spell we could try...last time I used it was on Sirius Black in duelling class." she said with an amused smile.
It had been funny watching the shock on his face, though she stood by what she'd said, he did deserve it. After all there were only so many times she was going to warn him. Taking her want firmly in her hand she smiled at Lachlan, "You better brace yourself...it's pretty effective...sure fire way to knock your opponent off their feet..." she told him, returning to her previous stance. Taking a breath she nodded her head once before flicking her wand and pointing it directly at Lachlan, "Everte Statum!" she called out, watching as the spell/hurling hex flew towards Lachlan, if this worked right he was going to be sent hurling back into the wall...once more...

so goodbye for a whileI'M OFF TO EXPLORE EVERY BOUNDARY AND EVERY DOOR He smiled bleakly, knowing exactly what she meant when when said she was worried about her parents. There had already been kidnappings of muggle students and their parents - some of whom weren't ever heard from again. Lachlan felt the same way about his parents, and his younger sister Melisa, who was still only in second year and a little bit too young to fully understand the situation outside of Hogwarts' strong walls. He was sent letters weekly from his parents with the message that they were OK and nothing had happened to them.
"Yeah, mine were pretty much the same," he said in return, shrugging. "I mean, it's not really safe for Melisa and me to go outside much anymore, but Trent stayed over at my house for a good month. He wouldn't get off the couch, really." He smiled at the thought. Lachlan had had to sit on Trent a couple of times in order to watch the television, much to Trent's protest.
"Sirius, eh?" he enquired, wiggling his eyebrows micheviously. He had no idea of anything that was going on between Emily and Sirius, but he was keen to find out. "Is he your boyfr -" but before Lachlan could finish the end of his sentence, he was blasted back off his feet into the wall behind him. He let out a high pitched, girly scream, much to his own dismay.
"Okay, I think I've had enough now," Lachlan croaked from his slumped position on the ground, one of his hands caught awkwardly behind his back. "Help up?" he groaned, holding his good hand out to Emily.

Emily had scowled at Lachlan's question and smiled in satisfaction as her spell cut him off and sent him flying backwards once more. Crossing her arm over her chest, she arched her eyebrow and watched him for a moment, "Enough already?" she asked, not bothering to hide the hint of amusement in her tone. Shaking her head she tucked her wand back into the waistband of her pants, before walking towards him. "What about you and Hestia?" she asked, inclining her head to the side a little as she spoke, a small smile tugging at her lips.
Taking his hand she helped Lachlan to stand, looking at him for a moment before giving him a playful punch in his arm and scowling, "And for the record, nothing is going on between Sirius and I, he is not my boy-friend..." she told him with a huff before turning on her heel and crossing the classroom once more, pulling her hair tie out and letting her curls loose once more.
Why she felt bothered about Lachlan's question she wasn't sure, so she shrugged it off and turned back to him with a smile as she picked up her jacket. "So we'll have to schedule another practice, there's so many spells that I think you'd find handy..." she said to him, shrugging on her jacket, for a moment she looked at him, "You didn't hurt yourself with that last fall did you?" she asked, concern in her voice.

so goodbye for a whileI'M OFF TO EXPLORE EVERY BOUNDARY AND EVERY DOOR Lachlan was a bit of a weakling. It wasn't obvious to all, but to those who knew him well - like Trent, Emily and Hestia, it wasn't hard to pick. She ignored his question about Sirius and changed the subject to Lachlan and Hestia. Obviously, she was sheepish about her and Sirius and tried to talk about Lachan's current pursuit instead.
"Me and Hes?" he asked, raising his eyebrows as he propped himself up against the wall behind him. "Uhhh... there's not much going on there, that's for sure." He wondered if Emily was okay talking about Lachlan's current crushes. They were exes after all, and as much as they were friends, sometimes, some conversations could still be awkward. "She hasn't quite gotten the hint yet. But I'll keep trying." He winked at Emily as she held out a hand for him.
"Nothing going on?" Lachlan teased. "Whatever you say, Em." He giggled. The conversation turned once again, but this time back to the subject of why they'd come here. Duelling. And Lachlan's patheticness at the subject. "Haha, yeah. I should probably practice that Protego spell some more, hey..." he shook his head in defeat. That last blast had hurt a little bit, but that was just because Lachlan had landed funny.
"Oh, really, I'm fine. I've had worse. Trent's pushed me down a flight of stairs before." He grinned. Truthfully, he had tripped, but Trent was there at the time and Lachlan just liked to pretend. "Shall I walk you back to the Gryffindor tower?" he offered, rubbing his wrist where he had fallen.

For a few moments Emily observed Lachlan, shrugging her shoulders lightly as she shrugged on her jacket and fluffed out her hair. The ex-girlfriend part of her felt the slight twinge of knowing he was pursuing someone else, the friend part of her simply eyed him warily. After all, not only was Lachlan a good friend, Hestia was as well, she just didn't want either of them getting hurt, "Well just be careful yeah...Hestia's a nice girl so when she finally does get the hint be good to her." she told him, her eyes holding slight warning in them.
Seeing him rub his wrist she shook her head and moved towards him, "And I'm being serious, there is nothing going on between Black and I...if the rumours are to be believed, he only has eyes for one girl lately..." she said, gently taking the other boys hand into hers and turning it. She was genuinely happy for Sirius and Marlene, if they were in fact a couple, it was about time Sirius stopped fooling around, sure she had a slight crush on the boy but she was happy for Marlene, her friend had liked him for a while now. "Looks like you may have sprained it a little..." she said a hint of guilt in her voice as she looked back up at Lachlan.
"No there's no need, you should get yourself back to the common room...I know what you're like for getting into trouble." she said teasingly. Pulling out her wand from the back of her pants, she smiled slightly and tapped the tip of it twice on his wrist, "Episkey." she said quietly, looking up at him, "Hows that feel?" she asked.

so goodbye for a whileI'M OFF TO EXPLORE EVERY BOUNDARY AND EVERY DOOR Lachlan knew that Emily and Hestia were close. He was glad that Emily seemed okay talking about it - as much as he'd never admit it out loud, Emily was one of the very few people he never wanted to lose as a friend. She was wonderful to be around and there was never an unhappy moment spent with her. Even their breakup was a bit cheery; they both kind of decided that they were better off as friends, and then the two of them ran down to the Great Hall to find some Acid Pops to suck on.
"I'll be good to her," he promised, smiling bleakly at her. "Promise." He stuck his pinky out, making a pinky-promise to Emily that he'd never hurt Hestia. Well, intentionally, anyway. Lachlan did have a bit of a reputation as a heart-breaker at times. He frowned at the news of Sirius - Emily sure as hell deserved him more than whoever his current love-bird was, and that was a fact.
Before Lachlan could say anything on the subject, Emily was already inspecting his wrist and announcing he had a bit of a sprain. Hah, trust Lachlan to get injured with whatever he did. It was just like him to fall funny and sprain something. He grinned at her comment about walking her back to the common room; Emily had a good way of pointing out the truth, but always doing so with a bit of humour and teasing on the side. It was one of the reasons why Emily had attracted Lachlan so much in the early days.
"Hey, yeah, that feels so much better!" he said, feeling around on his wrist after Emily had let it go. "Thanks," he grinned.
The torches that lit the room and the corridors were starting to dim down, meaning that curfew was going to be soon and that Filch would soon start doing the rounds, along with the Prefects and whatever else was patrolling the corridors nowadays. Peeves was bound to be around somewhere... "Okay," Lachlan said as he pulled his friend into a tight hug. "Thanks for all your help tonight, eh." He ruffled Emily's hair as he let go, grinning. "I'll get better at it." Eventually.
Lachlan bade goodnight to Emily with another hug and a goodbye, before walking out the door and back towards the Hufflepuff Common Room, where Trent was probably waiting to ambush him with another one of his occult books that he'd found in the library.
