IT AIN'T BROKE, SO DON'T FIX IT UNDERDOG, JUST LOOK AT THE MESS YOU'VE MADE
Harriet raced up the stairs two at at time towards the Gryffindor Girls dormitory. Something had passed between her friend and her older brother during the ten minutes they'd spent together sitting by the lake, and Harriet wasn't about to let it slide. She wanted all the details.
"Katherine," she said, pursing her lips with a curiosity burning in her eyes as she flung the door open. "Tell me everything."
Harry ran over to Katherine's bed and plonked herself down on the end, leaning her back up against the wooden four-post frame and putting her hands in her lap. "You know what I mean. You and my brother..." she started off, almost bursting out of her own skin with excitement.
Was it excitement, though? Harry barely knew. She was excited at the prospect of romance - for the both of them - but she wasn't entirely comfortable with her best friend dating her brother. Not to mind, though. It probably wouldn't happen anyway...

Katherine's mind was firmly set on the dark haired sixth year she'd spoken to this afternoon, and she couldn't fight the smile off her face. John had plaqued her thoughts all afternoon, she was sure she'd been smiling like a love sick fool in each of her classes. To be honest she was surprised no one had pointed it out as of yet.
She found herself brought out of her musings of John when his sister came running into the dorm room, almost knocking the door off it's hindges, before she swung it closed again. "What are you talking about?" she asked, laughing lightly at her friend, still somewhat surprised by her sudden appearence.
Katerine knew very well what Harry was talking about, even before she elaborated on what she meant. "There's nothing to tell...not really..." she said honestly, tucking her legs beneath her as Harry made herself comfortable on the her bed. She looked at the other girl for a moment with a smile before shaking her head and looking down at her hands.
She really wished she knew something, anything juicy enough to tell her friend. Fact of the matter was there was no hiding the fact she'd felt a deep connection to John, she could already feel herself falling for him, which worried her considering they'd spent barely ten minutes together. "I honestly don't know Harry...I think I like him..." she admitted, looking at her friend to gauge her reaction.

Nearly falling off the end of Katherine's bed with the sheer amount of excitedness, Harry managed to somewhat contain herself. "You think you like him?" she repeated, wiggling her eyebrows and giggling. "Are you going to date my brother, Katherine Dupree?" she giggled again, choosing to ignore the queasy feeling she was starting to feel in her stomach.
"Well, he seemed to warm up to you," Harriet replied in a matter of fact tone. John barely talked to anyone, and the fact that it took the school bell to split the two of them apart spoke paragraphs about him. "And the fact that you're now officially coming back to ours for Christmas."
Harriet wanted to tell Katherine what she really thought, but something at the back of her mind stopped her. She was putting her selfishness in front of others happiness again. Was there nothing that she would stop at? Harriet shook her head and put her party smile back on.
She should be happy for Katherine. And for John, if that was how he felt about Katherine. Harriet made a mental note to corner John later and ask him about it.
"Well, we'll have to start the wedding preparations," Harriet said in a matter of fact tone, jumping into the situation head-first as she always did. "I'm sure my brother will look very dapper in a suit," she giggled. This was too much.

"I'm not going to date your brother Harri don't be silly..." Katherine laughed, shoving her friend lightly but not enough to set her off balance as her cheeks flushed a violent shade of red. There was no denying the idea of actually dating John was more than appealing to her, but she doubted highly if he felt the same way, after all, "...he's a sixth year, I'm two years younger than him...I can see us being friends but he wouldn't want to date me..." she shook her head again and looked at her hands.
She didn't comment on the going to Harriet's for Christmas comment, because as of yet it wasn't official, not until they got the okay from their parents. The idea of spending such a magical time of year though with not only her best friend but her brother made Katherine smile brightly. Was Harriet really okay with all of this? Her friend was giving no indication to feeling otherwise.
One thing she couldn't shake from her mind were his eyes, the sincerity in them when he'd spoken. Never before had Katherine seen anything like that in the eyes of a guy his age, and he'd genuinely been interested in what she had to say, not rolled his eyes and called her a blood traitor like most. It should have felt strange to feel so at ease in someone's presence, so reluctant to leave them after only just meeting but Katherine couldn't help but feel something so right in it all...little did she know how much that one meeting was going to impact the rest of her life.
At the mention of weddings, Katherine's eyes widened but her heart seemed to miss a beat. Shaking her head she ignored the pleasent feeling it had given her and looked at Harriet, "I'm sure your brother would look extremely handsome in a suit but don't you dare start embarrassing me talking about weddings Harri...we're just friends...nothing more..." she laughed lightly and shook her head at the other girl.

Harriet rolled her eyes. "Sure, Katherine. Whatever you say," she stuck her tongue out at her friend and giggled. She knew something was up, but it wasn't up to her to push it between the two of them. John had never dated in his life, and no doubt wouldn't be very good at it.
Plus, it was kind of weird setting your best friend up with your older brother.
And they had only talked for ten minutes.
"Oh, don't worry Katherine," Harriet laughed as she reached forward to give her friend's blonde hair a ruffle. "I won't push anything." She sounded mischievous as she said it, but either way she knew that her own words were true.
"So, you really don't like swimming?" she pouted, giving her friend a sad look.
