BOGGART: Layla often has nightmares that her birth parents are trying to take her away from her father Jay.
MIRROR OF ERISED: When Layla gazes upon the Mirror of Erised, she sees her father standing over her while she holds a newborn in her arms.
PATRONUS: Though often mistaken for a unicorn, Layla’s patronus actually takes the form of an Arabian mare. While she still bears much of the innocence of a child, Layla is hot-blooded and strong, much like an Arabian.
PERSONALITY: Jay raised his daughter to think for herself and never let anyone talk her into something she’s not comfortable with. Layla lives her life by those two principles, and sometimes turns them back on her father in jest. She loves to laugh, though she isn’t as funny as she would like to be. If there was one word to describe her, it would be passionate. Everything she does is passionate, from her love to her anger and everything in between. But that passion comes with a price, because when she gets angry she loses herself in the anger and often ends up saying things that she doesn’t mean, hurting the people she loves. Layla is also fearless. While she cares what people say or think about her, she refuses to let other people’s opinions affect how she lives her life. No matter what, Layla will always end up doing what she feels is right, and not base her decision on what other people tell her.

HISTORY: Layla’s father, Jay Mustang, found her after her parents abandoned her. There were complications with her birth, so her birth mother was admitted into St. Mungo’s wizarding hospital. She didn’t even name the baby before disappearing into thin air. Jay had been visiting a friend from his Hogwarts days, a healer who spent most of her time in the maternity ward. He took one look at Layla, smiling up at him with jovial innocence, and decided to adopt her.
Not much is known about her birth parents, but when Layla was three or so Jay managed to discover the whole story. Layla’s mother was an unmarried pureblood witch by the name of Nicolette Zappala. The Zappala family was a well-known and highly respected pureblood wizarding family, and Nicolette’s pregnancy would have brought terrible shame to her family name. So Layla was left at St. Mungo’s while Nicolette and her parents apparated away. Jay was never able to discover the name of Layla’s father, the only piece of information he could find was that he too was a pureblood. The Zappala family managed to keep everything else under wraps.
But Layla never really cared about that. Sure, she sometimes wished she could ask Nicolette some things, and yes she had the usual inferiority complex that most people who were adopted have; but she never found herself wishing for things to be different. Even though Jay had never been the type to want children, he had been the most incredible father. He almost lost his job at one point because he didn’t want to leave five-year-old Layla home alone with the chicken pox.
Jay’s parents, Nathaniel and Charlotte Mustang, and his sister Katie were all very welcoming of Layla. Nathaniel and Charlotte were over the moon to have a granddaughter, and spoiled her as much as they could. Thankfully, Katie and Jay were able to keep her from becoming a brat. Despite her family’s love and support, Layla often had trouble keeping friends. Making friends was actually fairly easy for her, since she was so friendly and sincere, but she often had trouble keeping friends because of her passion and short temper.

ROLEPLAY SAMPLE: [Excerpt from a previous roleplay] It was that time again, the back to school supplies rush, and Layla was currently dragging her father Jay around like a portable bank. He didn’t trust her with money on her own... with good reason. So Layla was tasked with the tedious job of telling her father what she needed and why. Some things were easier to convince than others, for example the required books left no room for argument, but when Layla pointed out that she had outgrown her old robes, a look of fear crossed over Jay’s face, probably at the idea of his daughter growing up, and he put up a feeble defense. Needless to say, Layla won and they made their way to Madam Malkin’s and Jay ended up sitting awkwardly in a corner.
After they finished getting Layla fitted for new robes, the two passed the pet shop and for the fifth time she tried to convince her father that she was responsible enough for a pet. This time he caved and they bought an owl, which Layla named Sherrie (short for Scheherazade, a character from one of her favorite muggle stories). Still grinning, holding Sherrie’s cage in one hand and the bags with her robes in the other, Layla scurried towards Flourish and Blotts. The two had a silent agreement that Jay would look for her required books as well as the ones he needed, as long as Layla found at least one book to keep herself busy when she wasn’t doing schoolwork.
She knew she should stop skimming, that she would probably find a title she wanted if she actually looked at them, but she continued to skim. And that’s when it happened. Layla had been rounding the corner heading into the muggle studies section when she bumped into something solid, but not bookcase-like. As she looked up, she realized that she had just bumped into a classmate of hers. Scorpius Malfoy. She wouldn’t normally have known his name, but a bunch of her Housemates had been chattering about him, saying something about him being a Malfoy heir and whatever. Layla really didn’t care, but apparently some of her Housemates did.
Flustered, Layla started to apologize. “Oh no,” She groaned. “I’m so sorry! Are you okay?” Now she was just frustrated. Layla had always been clumsy, and was always embarrassing herself because of it. Thankfully today she managed to stop talking after asking if he was alright. Usually Layla was a nervous talker, so this was good.
