"-and...me...I was the third one, third student attacked."
April felt a sinking sensation - like a ton of let had just dropped to the pit of her stomach. If there was one thing she hadn't expected Emily to tell her, it was that. She'd thought maybe a friend, or a room mate but... but Emily herself?
April held a hand over her mouth to cover her shock at Emily's declaration. She just wanted to reach over and hug the young girl tightly - something like that... the cruciatus curse - that wasn't something a 15 year old should have to go through. It was just so... wrong.
Despite what she may have wanted to do, April sat still. Emily had already started speaking again, this time, more about Chase.
"I never saw myself falling for someone like Chase but after the attack, after finding out how much trouble he went to just to come see Lachie and I in the hospital, I got to see a completely different side to him. He makes me feel safe and protected...I mean, there are times when I still get so scared, terrified even, but Chase...he's like this wonderful light and he just...he makes everything better."
"Aww, Sweetie..." It was a little strange to be hearing this kind of thing about Chase seeing as the only side of him she'd ever really seen had been the side that laughed at the idea of relationships and commitment. The closest she'd seen to anything different was about 5 minutes ago when he'd defended Emily and told her that he loves her. But even thing - the idea of Chase doing that? Going out of his way, above and beyond, to see a girl he hardly knew just to make sure she was okay? And the way Emily spoke of him... It just wasn't something she expected to be hearing. That's not to say the words didn't please her at all- she was glad that he was finally growing up and maturing to be a fine young man.
"I love your son very much Mrs Connors...not that I'd dare tell him yet."
Well wasn't she in the lucky position today? Both Chase and Emily had admitted to loving one another, just not to each other, but to her. It was a little unexpected considering April's reaction to walking in on them was the worst reaction of them all...
It was impossible to miss the well of emotions threatening to overflow and now, more than ever, April wanted to pull her into a tight hug. So she did just that. She rounded the table and embraced Emily in a warm hug, holding her tight, even though it was a little awkward with Emily sitting down.
April pulled back and looked into Emily's face, smiling softly at her. She placed her hands on either side of Emily's face and brushed a thumb lightly over one cheek. "Oh, Emily..." April really didn't know what to say right now, so she just smiled again and pulled her into another hug.

Emily saw the shock in Mrs Connors eyes when she spoke of the attack. It was clear she hadn't been expecting Emily to admit she'd been one of the anonymous victims, Emily still found herself struggling to believe it herself sometimes. The moments she could forget about it where few and far between but extremely welcomed when they happened. Most of those moments were when she was with Chase, it was only when they were apart, when she was alone, or simply struggling to sleep that the memories came flooding back as well as the terror associated with them.
What she hadn't been expecting was to see the emotion in this woman's eyes, and what shocked her the most was when Mr Connors wrapped her arms around her tightly, pulling her into a motherly, warm hug. It was slightly awkward due to their position but Emily found herself unable to help but return it. It was comforting, for so long she'd gone without being able to have her own Mother hug her in such away that it was impossible to resist sinking into this embrace.
"Oh, Emily..."
Mrs Connors smiled softly down at Emily when she pulled back ever so slightly, her hand resting over her cheek for a moment before she smiled and pulled Emily into another hug. Of all the ways today could have gone this was most definitely one of the last ways Emily had seen things going. "I'm okay now..." she assured the other woman with a small smile, "I just wanted you to know that Chase helped me get to this point. It's hard not to smile when he's around...it can be kind of annoying." she joked as they separated, a soft chuckle escaping.

Risa continued to march along the corridor until she reached the kitchen door. So, as usual she was being kept out of the know, but that was okay, she was being sent to spy on her mum and Emily and report back. Which in many ways, was just as fun.
Of course, Risa wasn't going to start sneaking around listening at doors - her dad and Chase wanted more beer, and they probably wouldn't want to wait long for them. So, Risa skipped straight on into the kitchen, not even bothering to knock. From what Chase had just said, it sounded like her mum and Emily probably wouldn't be getting along very well but... when Risa entered the room she saw exactly the opposite to that.
Her mum and Emily were... hugging? She tried not to let her surprise show on her face. They didn't even seem to have noticed that she was there. Well this was a shock, Risa had been preparing herself to enter a war zone, but instead she was greeted with a peace treaty.
She slipped silently over to the fridge and opened the door to pick out a few more bottles to take through, and the nestled them once again in her arms. It was then that her mother seemed to notice her there.
"They asked for more bottles."
Well, Chase asked for more, but she wasn't going to mention that bit. Her mum seemed to want to do everything she could to stop her kids from growing up, and not letting Chase drink was one of the ways she thought she could achieve that, though it was a completely wasted effort.
Risa nodded happily and disappeared out of the room and back down the hall.

Before April had a chance to respond to Emily, and noise behind her caught her attention. She turned in time to see Risa closing the fridge door. "What are you doing sweetie?"
Oh, she should have known! More alcohol. Considering Rio played quidditch for a living, he sure was lazy when it came to getting up off his arse to get a bottle of beer from the fridge. He'd do anything he could think of to not have to get up, even if that meant sending their daughter on a slave run. Then again, he may just want to talk to Chase alone about what had happened...
Not that a trip to the kitchen and back was going to take long, so they really wouldn't get much time to talk. Perhaps April should try and keep Risa here a little longer? No, they'd complain about the beer... unless...
"Risa, baby? Come back along here when you're done. You can help me with the dinner, okay sweetie?" Risa nodded happily and skipped off out of the room. April watched her go and then turned back to Emily.
"So... tell me, how long did Chase invite you for, because I'm thinking it was for more than just a quick one, if you know what I mean." She smiled and gave Emily a wink, before picking up the glass of juice she'd laid out for herself and taking a drink. From what Chase had said, it seemed like he'd invited her to stay for Christmas, and if that was the case, April would happily ask her to stay, maybe for longer, too.

They separated and almost instantly her eyes landed on Risa, causing a small smile to spread over her face. She raised her eyebrows looking at the bottles in the young girls arms, and resisted the urge to shake her head. Had Chase and his Father sent in the young girl to get the bottles or was that an excuse. Emily knew Chase so quickly figured out it was probably the latter of those two options. That thought made her smile softly, and she decided to give Chase a kiss for it later, if they got any more time alone that was, if she was honest she doubted they'd be left in the same room alone for too long.
"Risa, baby? Come back along here when you're done. You can help me with the dinner, okay sweetie?
Emily looked up at Mrs Connors and smiled as the other woman turned to face her. Maybe she could help out with dinner as well, it was the least she could do after what had happened, and they were allowing her to stay. "So... tell me, how long did Chase invite you for, because I'm thinking it was for more than just a quick one, if you know what I mean." Emily blushed slightly and laughed softly at the wink, tucking a stray curl behind her ear as she looked back up at Mrs Connors, doing her best to ignore the 'quick one' bit of the sentence.
"There was no real time set if I'm honest. He just asked me to come over for Christmas, save me spending it alone in the dorm room." she replied with a small smile. If that was all she stayed, then Emily would easily return to the school once Christmas day was over, she didn't mind, just the idea of spending it with a family was too great to pass up. Though with today's events was it even possible anymore? She didn't think Mrs Connors would turn her away, something had changed between them in the last half hour thankfully. "I wouldn't mind helping with dinner..." she said after a few moments.

"Have all of your roommates gone home for Christmas?" She didn't want to ask too many questions, but she was curious as to why Emily hadn't gone home herself. April didn't know what she'd do if she didn't have her kids with her for Christmas, but then, not all families were so close, were they? Was that what was behind this, or was it simply a case of parents making other plans? Who knew, but she didn't want to pry too much. But just the mention of spending Christmas alone in the dorms made her think that it wasn't just a case of 'I want to spend Christmas with my friends' that had been keeping Emily in the school.
"I wouldn't mind helping with dinner…"
April smiled and reached for Emily's hand, giving it a light squeeze. "Usually, I'd say don't worry about it and leave it to Risa to help, but since it's Christmas tomorrow, and I always like to get some of the basics prepared the night before, I wont' say no to an extra helping hand - if you don't mind endless amounts of vegetable peeling and turkey stuffing." She gave another smile and picked up the empty glasses, letting go of them as she neared the sink. Magic kicked in and picked the glasses from the air and into the sink, water turning on to clean them automatically before they settled themselves neatly onto the draining board.
"Heaven knows asking Rio or Chase to help would be pointless. Men. Never trust one in a kitchen. Everything ends up ten times as alcoholic as it should be." April headed into the pantry and brought out the box of things she'd sorted earlier that needed to be prepared. She always made too much, but she really didn't care. "I swear, the other year Rio was supposed to be doing one thing - instructions said add 250ml of water, it was about 50ml actual water the rest pure vodka. Risa's only 10 now! Poor girl."
April laughed to herself at the memory. She hadn't been best pleased at the time, but it was easy to look back on it and laugh now.
