April was a little taken aback at the way Chase was all but shouting at her now, and it only made her more annoyed than before. He kept accusing her of things and acting like she was being irrational, when she really didn't think that she was. He'd given her no reason to believe him, and it was going to take more than him saying the girl wasn't like the rest for her to change her mind.
"Where do you think you're going?" She asked sharply and he reached for the door handle. This wasn't the end of this. She couldn't just deal with him storming out on her like this. She wanted the damn truth from him.
At Chase's response, her jaw dropped slightly and her eyes narrowed to a glare. "Why do you keep defending that girl?"

"Where do you think you're going?"
"Where do you think mum? Back to school. I had asked Emily to stay here for the holidays but since you're not even going to give her a chance I'm just going to go back with her and do it that way." Whatever happened, he was spending Christmas with Emily whether it was at home or at school. He wasn't going to be persuaded otherwise.
He was just feeling so damned angry right now that he could swear his blood was beginning to boil. Why would she just... get over it! Could she not just, this once, make a damn excepting and listen to him rather than going off on one at him? Could she not just accept the fact that Emily wasn't just another girl just like she wanted to believe she was?
"Why do you keep defending that girl?"
Chase spun angrily on the spot. "Because I f*cking love her!"
The words hit him like a ton of bricks and he felt his back hit the kitchen door and he sunk to the floor, blinking rapidly, in some kind of state of shock. What had he just said?
He said he loved Emily... he just told his mother that he loved Emily... Had he really? Holy sh*t... Did he? He wouldn't have said it if he didn't, would he? But that wasn't something he'd let himself even question before. Well he was questioning it now. Did he love her? Yes.
That realization made a thousand and one things flood through him in one moment and his brain seemed to pause - time seemed to paused. He forgot his mum was there. He forgot they'd just been arguing. He forgot he was about to leave the room and go back to school... There was only one thing on his mind at that moment.
He loved Emily.

"Because I f*cking love her!"
If there was one thing that April Connors hadn't been expecting to hear that day, that was it. And from the looks of things, Chase hadn't been expecting it either.
She watched as he all but fell against the door and his legs pretty much gave out underneath him. He looked like he was in a state of shock at his own words, and suddenly everything that had happened and been said over the last few minutes faded away.
She was glad that she'd still been sitting on the ground when he'd said it or she was pretty sure she would have fallen over too. Had Chase really just said he loved a girl?
April closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She'd been far too quick to judge, hadn't she? She should never have just assumed that the girl upstairs was 'just another girl'... she should have listened to him...
Well she was listening now.
Just the whole way that he'd reacted to saying those words... She didn't doubt he meant them - she couldn't. Those words were raw and true, and the fact that he still sat there in a stunned silence?
"Oh, Chase..." April pushed herself to her feet and headed over to him, crouching down in front of him and resting a hand on his cheek, attempting a smile. She'd really messed up with the things that she'd said, and all along he'd been telling the truth. Now what did she do?

He loved her...
He actually loved her. He couldn't deny it. He couldn't. Now that he'd said it and he'd actually thought about it he knew that there was no way that he could take it back. He really did love her. And that was one hell of a scary thought...
He didn't know how long had passed, but at some point he became aware of his mother moving towards him and touching his face gently, saying his name.
He managed to bring his attention to focus on her, his mind still feeling a little numb from the sudden rush of emotion that had hit him. "I love her..." He whispered, shaking his head, eyes moving to stare off in the distance again. Some how saying the words again made it all the more real and he drew in a long, shuddering breath.
"F*ck..." Love... If he wasn't scared at the idea of a relationship before he sure was now, and he was pretty sure that it showed on his face.

April ran her hand softly over her sons' cheek. Of all the things to hear today this had to be one of the least expected of them all. Slowly, he brought his attention around enough to look at her again, and repeated what he'd just shouted, just with less of the swearing.
April smiled softly at him. There was just something in his voice as he said it...
As soon as he said it his gaze drifted off again and he took a deep, shuddering breath. "F*ck..." Of course the swearing hadn't stayed away for long, but she wasn't going to bring that up now. There was something new it in this time... something that bordered on fear, she though. She didn't blame him really, the words seemed to hit him with such force as she said them that she really wasn't surprised that they were hard for him to comprehend right now.
April reached for Chase's hands and gave them a squeeze. "You've just realized it, haven't you? That you love her..."
It was obvious, but she had to ask it. If the was for real - and she was sure it was - then she really wanted to give that girl a chance... if she was even still here, that was. Any girl who could actually steal her sons heart and stop his old ways deserved that much from her.
"Where is she now?" April stepped back and tugged on Chase's hands, encouraging him to his feet. He stood unsteadily and she wrapped her arms around him in a tight hug. As crazy as it might sound, she was actually rather proud of him at that moment.

"You've just realized it, haven't you? That you love her..."
Chase looked down to the hands that held his and he squeezed back. He felt numb, yet everything still seemed to race with the realization. Everything seemed to be working in opposites... It was like... on the inside everything was working double speed, but on the outside, half speed. And even to him that didn't make sense.
He nodded slowly. How hadn't he realized it before? Was it just because he hadn't let himself think about it? Or was it because he was too scared to consider it as a possibility? Or was he really just that blind to his own emotions?
"Where is she now?"
His mum stood and tugged him with her and he pushed unsteadily to his feet. Again, externally, nothing seemed to be working quite right and he felt a bit detached from his body. He wobbled unsteadily on legs he no longer knew if he owned.
Arms wrapped around him and hugged him tightly, and Chase managed to wrap his around her in return, burying his face in her shoulder like he used to do when he was small. There was some comfort in the gesture and he took as much of it as he could get. Even at 15, a mum-hug still did wonders. If it had been any other time but now he would have laughed at himself for thinking something like that, but he didn't.
"Upstairs." Was all that he could muster. With a sigh, Chase just hugged his mum back, everything from before - the arguing and everything - it was all forgotten right now.
