Chase headed down stairs with every intention of talking to his mum and explaining to her that Emily wasn't just 'another girl', and this time, he was actually serious about her. It wasn't going to be easy considering what she'd just walked in on, but he had to try. The last thing he wanted was to have to tell Em that his mother refused to rethink her first judgement and she had to go back to Hogwarts for the holidays. If it came to that, Chase would probably just back his bag and go back to school with her to spend the holiday with her that way...
He passed Risa on the stairs but paid no attention to her, not even thinking about the fact that Emily was still upstairs and that Risa might see her or whatever. All he could think about were the myriad of thoughts racing through his mind as he wondered what he was supposed to say to make this all better.
Chase looked into the living room but only his dad was in there, bottle of beer in hand as he stared out of the window. No mother in sight. Chase continued his way down the hall looking in rooms as he went. As he should have expected, his mother was in the kitchen. She was kneeling on the floor with their dogs padding around her and licking at her face. Even Chase could tell that she was just distracting herself and that what she'd seen upstairs was still on her mind.
"Mum?" He said softly as he walked into the room, pushing the door shut behind him which was something they rarely did.

April had allowed herself to be steered downstairs but quickly insisted she be left alone. Rio had tried to talk to her but she refused to listen. The images of what she'd seen up there were replaying over and over in her mind. Chase was only 15... this thing he had with meaningless sex... it had to stop! It couldn't be healthy for a boy his age, it couldn't! When she was his age she was in a long term relationship, and she still was now. She wasn't going around sleeping with any old Tom, Dick, and Harry. And neither was Rio! Sure he'd been while a few people before her, but never as bad as Chase.
She let the dogs in from outside and used a towel to dry them off, just to waste time rather than spell them dry. Anything she could do to distract herself right now would be a good thing...
"Mum?"
She sighed but didn't look up, not sure how to face Chase right now. Of all the times for something like this to happen, why did it have to be on Christmas eve?
"Chase..." She sighed again, not sure what to say to him.

Chase sighed as he closed the door behind him. So now his mother couldn't even look at him? This was great... He had no idea at all what he was even supposed to say to her. Ideas and phrased had been racing through his mind a mile a minute but now that he was here and facing her, his mind was pulling a blank.
"Chase..."
He sighed, heading across the room to sit on the floor near her. She still hadn't looked at him. For a minute, Chase just let the silence linger between them, uncertain of what the right thing to say would be.
"This is different mum..."

She was aware that Chase had moved across the room and sat down beside her, but she didn't speak. She didn't know what to say. She was worried about him, she really was. These things he did...
"This is different mum..."
She turned to look at him then but he was staring across the room rather than looking at her. She shook her head slowly and frowned. "How is this different? We go out for a day and we come back to you three quarters of the way to having sex... again? Chase..."
What was she supposed to think when he did things like this? How could he even say this was different? Once again he had a girl in his room and was, no doubt, intending to have sex with her. Was she one of these 'friends with benefits' type he'd once joked about? Chase didn't do relationships, he'd made that quite clear. Anything else he did... It wasn't good...

Finally, his mother turned to look at him. He couldn't even look her way though, just started straight across the room at the opposite wall. He knew just what she though this was and he knew exactly what look he'd see in her eye if he looked at her right now, and it was one he really didn't want to see.
"How is this different? We go out for a day and we come back to you three quarters of the way to having sex... again? Chase..."
"Mum..." He groaned and thumped his head off the wall behind him. Damn it. They way he'd been the last few years had etched expectation in her mind, and he knew it was going to be hard to change her mind.
"I told you. It's not like that. She's not just another girl to me." He looked at her then, locking eyes with her, hoping to try and convince her that he meant what he was saying.

"I told you. It's not like that. She's not just another girl to me."
"I've heard that line before too! You were lying through your teeth to me as you said it. Remember before we went to Spain? How do you expect me to believe you when you say something like that?"
Of all the thing to say, that wasn't the one. She had no idea how she was supposed to believe him when he said that. He'd said it before and he hadn't meant it for a minute. He'd just made it sound like he meant it so that they'd view things differently. She'd been so wrong then... she wasn't going to make that mistake again now.
How could he sit there and look her in the eye, all the while lying to her?

Chase sighed and shook his head, looking down at his hands. He should have known that that would have been on her mind. "I was 14 then mum..." That was no excuse for what he'd done, but he hadn't known any better at the time.
This was going to be harder than he though it would be and he still had absolutely no idea what he was supposed to say to make everything better. He really, really needed to find a way to make her rethink her judgement of Emily. This first meeting that had gone horrendously wrong, but the last thing he wanted was for it to last, and for Emily to have to go back to Hogwarts. He just knew that if she gave her a change, his mum would get on great with Emily... he just needed to convince her to give her that chance.
"Emily is... She's not another girl mum. I know what I said and I know what I've done, but I'm not making this up. Not this time. I care about her." He looked down. He'd said for so long that he wasn't bothered about relationships and that he preferred the free and easy life... he never thought he'd be where he was at that moment in time. Would he change it? Never. But did it scare him? Most definitely.

April shook her head and looked down her self, reaching out to stroke the closest dog to them. This was a harder conversation than she'd expected it to be. She hadn't even expected it to happen to soon after it had happened.
"Emily is... She's not another girl mum. I know what I said and I know what I've done, but I'm not making this up. Not this time. I care about her."
April glanced over at her son as he spoke, watching his face. There was a look there that made her wonder if he was actually telling the truth or not. But how could he be? He'd made it so clear that he wasn't into serious relationships, so why would that change now?
"So what is she then? If she's not just another... another sl*t you've picked up like every time before, then what is she? Because what I saw up there..."
Maybe she was being far too harsh, but there was no other word to describe the girls she'd seen in the past. She found it hard to believe that this girl could be any different than that.

"So what is she then? If she's not just another... another sl*t you've picked up like every time before, then what is she? Because what I saw up there..."
"Mum!" Again he half groaned, half sighed. "Emily isn't like those girls, mum. If you just give her a chance you'll see that. What you saw was..." Was what? Was pretty much the same as what she always saw, and that wasn't a good thing. There were no words he could use to explain just how different this was to all those times.

"What I saw is exactly the same as what I've seen a hundred times before!" That was a major exaggeration but at times, it didn't feel like it. Why should I give her a chance, Chase? Why? Some girl comes in here with every intention of having sex in my house and I don't even get to know her name first? You've given me absolutely no reason to believe you, Chase. You've never mentioned a girl before now and you've been home a week!"
If he really cared about some girl, surely he'd have mentioned it before now. Why would he stay quiet about it and then just suddenly appear here with her?
They'd only been out of the house a few hours and somewhere in that time Chase had brought this... Emily girl in, and they were messing around already...

Chase closed his eyes and took a deep breath. How had he managed to screw things up so badly already? He didn't know whether to blame himself for how this turned out, or blame his parents for being the ones who came home so early... He supposed it probably was his fault... he should have told them about Emily before now and maybe this whole thing wouldn't have been so bad.
The more his mother said, the more Chase got annoyed. Part of him couldn't help but think that she just didn't want to give Emily a chance and that she didn't want to listen to his explanation. Why was it so hard for her to just believe him this time?
"I didn't mention her because I knew that you wouldn't believe me. Just admit you wouldn't have, you know it." He looked in the other direction and stared at the opposite wall, muttering as he did. "If Trent was here you'd believe him without question..." Trent always came across as the super sensible one, and his mother tended to believe everything that Trent told her. If he'd been here to tell her... Chase sighed. But Trent wasn't here, and Chase didn't have the same way with words that his friend had. He'd have to find a way to make her believe him his own way.

April gave Chase a look. She had to wonder if there was actually a truth to his words though. Would she have believed him? Probably not. Did she believe him now? Not really. But... was that really how he felt? That was kind of worrying to her. Did he feel like he couldn't talk to her about stuff like this? She sighed and looked to the dogs. This wasn't the best of conversations they'd ever had...
"If Trent was here you'd believe him without question..."
April looked at his sharply. "If Trent was here I'm pretty certain I wouldn't have seen what I just did and we wouldn't be having this problem!"

Chase scoffed and rolled his eyes, giving her a look. "Of course that wouldn't have happened if Trent was here. It wouldn't have happened if any guy was here whether you knew them or not. And you certainly wouldn't be acting this way!"
He pushed to his feet and turned to glare at his mother. "What do you have against girls that I know? You have this... this automatic assumption that they're some kind of sleep around and you won't even give them a chance! To be honest mum, I think that even if you hadn't seen what you just did up there you'd still be acting just the same as you are now. It makes no difference to you."
He turned and started for the door angrily.

April felt her cheeks flush with annoyance as Chase accused her of treating ever girl he knew the same way. He headed towards the door angrily and she knew she couldn't just let him walk away from the conversation like this. There was more to be said.
"Considering all the girls you ever seem to talk to are all sleep around what else do you expect me to believe? That girl is no different to any other I don't care what you say-"
Chase cut her off as she spoke.

He spun around on the spot, his voice raised in much the same way as his mothers was raised now. "You won't ever give her a damned chance! Emily isn't like other girls, mum! She's not a sl*t. She's not a sleep around. She doesn't just... just dive into bed with someone no strings attached! She's not like that."
Chase was feeling so annoyed at that moment that he knew that if he didn't leave the room then and calm himself down a little that he really would say something that he'd regret. The last thing he wanted was a Christmas where he wasn't talking to his parents or something, but right now, just disappearing back to Hogwarts with Emily was looking like the better option. He turned and made for the door again.
